Someone here tried it and it turned into a complete ball ache..
How are you going to get caught out? It is insured properly, still falls in the same tax band, still MOT's the same..

the mot man told me the last time that technically he should fail it as its not as his computer is telling him and it effects the emission levels. he passed it anyway and told me if i got stopped the engine was changed after the mot...

AFAIK the DVLA will only want to inspect the car if it goes into a lower tax bracket.
As your tax will stay the same for the m30 there shouldn't be too much messing, as above send off v5 with new capacity and engine number.

Did mine OK, just sent the reg doc off with new capacity and engine number. Never had any problems and just went through MOT OK.

Correct me if im wrong but the year engine is from is what affect mot emmissions rather than year of the car itself? for example if the car is a 1995 model and your swap in a pre march 1992 engine the mot emmissions level is based on pre march 1992? If so its more forgiving as you can do away with cats and allowed slightly higher emmissions but currently fall under pre march 1992 tax bracket too making it cheaper to tax?

you wont have any probs if youve informed the dvla but if you go for an mot and the computer says you still have the standard engine....goosiegander wrote:And the same here, posted off with new cc and eng no. No problems 2 mot's later

theyve no reason to look under the bonnet but the emission levels might be different from the standard engine...

I checked with MOT man when I took mine in, emissions are related to original registration / manufacture date of car.ShakeyC wrote:Correct me if im wrong but the year engine is from is what affect mot emmissions rather than year of the car itself? for example if the car is a 1995 model and your swap in a pre march 1992 engine the mot emmissions level is based on pre march 1992? I'm pretty certain all cars before 1992 had to meet the same levels..fuzzy wrote:theyve no reason to look under the bonnet but the emission levels might be different from the standard engine...

and when its a 1991 car and an engine of undetermined age that uses parts that span both sides of 1992? 4wd block ,manifolds and turbo from 1992 on... 2wd head, ecu, gearbox 1986 -1991 ...
would they go by cars age or the oldest part of the engine?

I tried to find out today but VOSA are just a bunch of ex bus drivers, miserable unhelpful and no real knowledge or skill of anything they ment to do
From my understanding if you can prove via engine block number and garage reciept to help ID origins of the engine you inform DVLA of new engine number, cc and fuel type you get your log book back and all is well and your emissions is calculated from those factors.
What i was told by VOSA if you change engines you must do the same and from car registration date, engine number, cc and fuel type is used to put you in correct class, if pre 92 engine number your allowed higher emissions and no cat and slightly lower tax too.
Fuzzy in your case I would use your engine block number to ID your cars emissions data if its pre march 92 I would change V5 over and pay less tax and be allowed more smoke and no cats.
