Hartge H36 Project (E30 M3 with S38 M5 engine)
Moderator: martauto
Okay I've been wondering about the black box on your ECU like some of the others in here. And since it says Hartge it must have something to do with the modifications done to the ECU's programming.
If you look at the intake there is a smalle vacuum actuator located between cylinder 2 and 3 inlet runner. I think the black box controls the timing of that actuator. Its has to do with resonans in the intake that benefit the engines breathing. See more on this German explanation.

As you can see closing that valve makes quite a difference between 2500 and 4200 rpm and again from 6600 rpm upwards. That's my educated guess.

That's a good suggestion Soren, and I'm now in the position to check things like this out as the engine is out of the car. Was quite a funny process getting it out, disconnected everthing linking the shell to the engine as per any other engine change, but instead of using a crane, a friend and I just lifted it up manually and carried it off!
So the list of to do jobs is shaping up now;
- Clean engine and remove the sump so it can be taken to a Tig welding specialist
- Try and find the engine oil temperature sensor (it has eluded me thus far)
- Remove gearbox and inspect clutch
- Repair damage to the gearbox, one of the mounting points has sheared off in the impact. This really shouldn't have happened but I notice in my history of invoices there is a bill from our friends Munich Legends where they have modified the gearbox mountings...
- Rebuild the drivers seat onto another Recaro SR seat frame
- Get damage to doorcard and rear seat base repaired, and probably reconnalised the whole interior
- Get a spark plug spanner which actually fits the engine so I can do a compression test
- Find out if it uses M3 or M5 engine mounts, and buy replacments
- Order loads of bits from BMW
- Find a nice 1989 or later Alpine White II M3!

Is this of any use to you Theo?
http://www.racecarsdirect.com/listing/2 ... SHELL.html
I've not idea what year it is or anything about it. No relation to the seller either.
I've also seen an M3 on www.rallycross.de too, mainly because it's the correct year, 1989 and cheap (?) at 7,500 euros. Go to rallycross.de and then check the for sale section. It's an Italian M3....
I'll post more ideas as I find them.
But I thought I'd post it just in case.
The Loy that belongs to the Sava.

That Italien M3 Savaloy is refering to is a 320iS and that's basically a 325i with a 2,0 litre S14 engine, so the shell is not th right one. Would have been a steal if it was an M3 for 7500 euro.
And also the temperature sensor. The M3 uses a pressureswitch/temperature sensor. I would assume they used that on this car so its locate on the oilfilter console.
And finally, don't know if you have gotten to the instrumentcluster, but could you tell me what code plug it uses if it's a standard one? It's located on the bottom front of the cluster on your right if your facing it like in the car. It tells the cluster how many cylinders, how many litres of fuel before the light goes on and also some fuelconsumption etc. Makes the cluster decifre the values from the engine etc. properly. If you make a picture of it that would be the easiset I think.

It's not on the oil filter canister, but that is where the VDO oil pressure sender is. I think the temperature sensor might previously have been in the sump, and has gone missing when the sump was repaired as there is a stray wire down in that area which nothing to connect onto.
The coding plug on the instrument cluster has the part number 1 385 468, which according to realoem doesn't exist. Maybe it's been replaced by a different part number?

If that 1989 M3 is stil intact, that might be worth a look. Your going to do some metal work on it anyway.

The e34 seems to have 2 sensor in the oilfilter console see:
http://bmwfans.info/original/E34/Lim/M5 ... l-11_1267/
Or does yours look like the M635CSI:
http://bmwfans.info/original/E24/Cou/M6 ... l-11_1257/
Then the pressure switch might be the M3 kind that has both pressure and temperature.

I wasn't sure but thought it was worth posting as it had been the cheapest 'M3' I'd seen so far.
There's a couple of M3's on Pistonheads at £8k (that appear to be roadworthy) that have caught my eye.
Otherwise I'm checking alot of Motorsport websites for original shells.
In fact I got quite excited when I saw an advert for a BTCC shell that had been renovated and looked just the part until I saw the advert date; Jan 2007......
I'll keep looking.

For what it's worth here's the advert I mentioned in a previous post regarding an ex-BTCC motorsport shell:
http://www.racecarsdirect.com/listing/9 ... _BTCC.html
It might be worth a call - you never know.

Also Vink Motorsport (www.vinkmotorsport.nl) has a motorsport shell for sale but it's probably got too many bars in it!

The Ashwood Autos one in white?
Well here we are all fussing about Theo's H36 and it getting on the road again and what do I see, the red H35-24 is for sale. So for anyone out there wanting to see what thrills Theo has in store when he's done. Here's is the chance:
I can ad one detail he doesn't mention, it has been fitted with a 6 speed e34 M5 gearbox. I remember that from when it was on ebay. Same wheels as then but thank god he has removed those ugly e36 M3 mirrors.

And Theo it's got that boot mounted washerbottle we taked about.

Might be worth a look if it was in the UK, but the cost of shipping plus the cost of a respray mean that it's not really viable.
By the way, any idea why I can't register on S14.net?
Lame, there's a well suited car on there at the moment;

I believe to register you have to prove ownership of some sparco race apparel and a nuremburger ring sticker !

It's been extended. You now have to prove your ability to talk endlessley about Alpha N and chassis balance through the Carousel.pacerpete wrote:Theo325 wrote:Might be worth a look if it was in the UK, but the cost of shipping plus the cost of a respray mean that it's not really viable.

The thread BarryJ refers too, is the "wanta be" car (it's not a real H35-24)

Update; It's really, really cold and I've done very little of note.
I'm getting a plate made up so I can mount the s38 to my engine stand. The block doesn't really have four nicely placed bolt holes so I will bolt the plate to the block using all the various holes, and then bolt the plate to my engine stand using four nicely spread M12 bolts.
Other news...... I've bought this:

It wasn't cheap Paul, I think cheap M3's have pretty much ceased to exist in the last year or so.
Pete, you're right. In order for this to be the best one the zone it needs a council e36 paintjob. Dreaming of 'Anus' as we speak....
