More rust the further north you go!
Moderator: martauto
A lot of people have advised me not buy an e30 from to far north as due to a more rain and snow they are more likely to have more salt on the roads which leads to more rusting.
Has anybody experinced with their e30's or is there any truth in this?
Thanks

can't say that's a fact.
What about cars from the south coast or any coastal region?

if a car is 15-20 years old like the e30 and had a few owners then t could of been up and down the country living anywhere so you will never no if its supposed to be lest rusty because its live down south.

Good point. Mine rolled out of the showroom in Northern Ireland, has resided in Cheshire, Lancashire, Wales, and now in Essex.Sanchez wrote:if a car is 15-20 years old like the e30 and had a few owners then t could of been up and down the country living anywhere so you will never no if its supposed to be lest rusty because its live down south.
Maintenance upkeep is what is important - not physical location.
If it ain't broke, fix it till it is

Not at all. Scotch is a drink. Scottish is a term used to define things from Scotland.town325i wrote:you trying to say something (your alcoholic)beemerbird wrote:I would buy a scotch car if it was single malt..... some owners up north have garages to keep their pride and joy in would you believe?
I once bought a 1 owner cab off ebay that was from the south coast it was crusty every where
it now resides in Ireland

LMFAO at this thread....Ive never heard such a stupid thing....A car is only as good as how its been kept !
Saying that though, Cars from areas near the coasts are more prone to rust due to the salty air.

A garage can be the worst place of all if it's not well ventilated, allows condensation to form in hidden areas that never dry properley.e30topless wrote:some owners up north have garages to keep their pride and joy in would you believe?

Seem to remember a certain well known Scottish zoner travelling to the Midlands several times to view tourings last 'summer',because 'all the one's in Scotland that are for sale are rusty....'The E34 donor that I bought had lived a good part of it's 13 years north of the border and the underside was in a terrible state.Sorry,on balance I agree that cars from the north are more likely to be rusty!!

I agree, My first car was a Vauxhall Nova which I bought about 6 months before passing my test....It was mint with zero rust....My mum had the tumble dryer in the garage and it used to cause condensation....By the time I had past my test the arches had begun to bubble.Bewdley320T wrote:A garage can be the worst place of all if it's not well ventilated, allows condensation to form in hidden areas that never dry properley.e30topless wrote:some owners up north have garages to keep their pride and joy in would you believe?

its a couple of hundred miles difference not half way across the world. dont you get rain in manchester and the like then?youll get rusty bangers both sides of the border if theyve not been maintained. weather doesnt follow national borders.
any cars from any coastal areas will suffer more.

Bollox. You'll be saying that house prices in the south are higher due to the sunny weather next. Lets have some facts to back up the speculation please!

Non of us 'Southern Softies' are suggesting that our Scottish zoner friends do not care for their cars,be they E30's or lesser things, but the plain fact is that cars that have spent a considerable time 'up north' are far more likely to be rusty. In my experience,it rains in Manchester, rather than the hard frosts that Glasgow suffers, for example,so the diligent Glasgow authorities send their spreader lorries out to deliver rust to the car population with greater frequency....
Youth is wasted on the young.
It stands to reason that cars that spend most of their lives in colder/wetter/saltier conditions will rust more than ones at the other end of the spectrum. But that absolutely does not mean that 'all Scottish cars are rusty', there are so many factors influencing how much rust a car has other than its geographical location.
My 4dr spent the last 18 years in Bournemouth and has virtually no rust, but it was garaged, washed and given plenty of time with the touch up stick by some old giffer. The touring needs a spot of welding - when we discovered it we joked about 'bloody scottish cars' as that was where it was first registered, but frankly it's the difference between a one-old-owner minter and a multiple owner workhorse.
And Morat, the reason house prices are higher in the south is because I live here and I'm f**king great, me

Fuzzy, Im from Manchester and yeah it does rain but Im not one of the ones who is saying the Northern cars are more prone to rust....I think its a load of bollocks to suggest it.fuzzy wrote:its a couple of hundred miles difference not half way across the world. dont you get rain in manchester and the like then?youll get rusty bangers both sides of the border if theyve not been maintained. weather doesnt follow national borders.

I have owned literally hundreds of cars and IT IS A FACT that scottish/northern cars are generally in poorer body/underbody condition than their 'southern' counterparts. Obviously there are exceptions to every rule but when buying a car it is a good rule to pay heed to.

I think the real cause is more likely to be that southerners polish their cars on a sunday morning after a night on the shandy and northerners still have a hangover from drinking beer ;)
