have a look here:-

Think it's pin 7 for cars with 'D' shaped connector.

Brianmoore suggests that you ground it to an earthing point under the bonnet somewhere rather than trying to find the earthing pin in the connector as it'll save you buring something out if you put it in the wrong pin.

Proper tool only costs a few quid and makes the job so easy.

Sorry to jump this one but my SI board died a few years ago and the dealer service guy disabled it totally after trying a new battery to no avail. Are new SI boards hard to find and how hard are they to fit? I knoiw the SI isn't really essential but if not too much grief or cost I like the idea of having it going

Any idiot can just pull off the SI board's daughter board with the lights/LEDs on and extinguish the display, but the SI board is essential to the operation of the instrument cluster in general. All the electronics for the instruments, except for the speedo, are contained on the SI board.
No problem in getting replacement boards - your BMW dealer will be happy to sell you one, and there's one in every scrap E30. Look for one with lithium batteries, and, as long as it hasn't been left switched on and disconnected from the car battery for too long, the chances are it will be as good as new.

Thanks Brian, I am installing a new dash over next couple of weeks and will address things then. Finding a good SI board (dealers here want a fortune) will probably be the difficult part. Can it be from any E30 or does it need to be pre facelift? Is the new board plug and play or do I need to get the soldering iron out?

Sorry to jump in but can the batteries be replaced in the dashes as mine has gone a bit wobbly since I left the battery disconnected
If so anyone know where I can find the batteries?
Thanks
Chris

If your cluster is the really ancient type that doesn't have the coding plug on the front lower right face, then the later types aren't going to fit. Getting past the limits of my knowledge here, but AFAIK, a later type cluster complete, is a direct replacement.
