Cabby sub that leaves some room?

I have a an 89 cabby with sub in the boot that takes up half the space. Does anyone know of a solution that can leave me with some usable space. I did have an MR2 a few years back with small subs behind the seats, could the same be done under the seats?

Forgive my ignorance, ICE is not my thing (I even had to look up what ICE stood for)

it depends on what size sub you need to run.

i have put a 12inch JBL in and still have enough space in my boot for a wakeboard or golfclubs or a load of shopping, i made best use out of the space uner the rear hood storage area. i needed 3 cubic feet (actually 3.2cu.ft) and the box is ported to the side you cannot see in the pic. it looks deceptive but there is still a good amount of space in there, the speaker is covered with a cheapo grill i had lying about so no worries about the cone, and as you can see a handy amp mounting too. The box wedges hard into the space under the rear enclosure and thus no need for drilling etc etc.

i also power the amp from the rear demister blower unit and it runs fine (although i expect SOMEONE will be along soon to tell me my box is not good, wont sound good and the supply in suffcient) but suffice to say its worked fine for a couple of years.

with this set up i can also remove the whole thing to get to the spare tyre and i can turn off the sub from the dashboard by simply switching off the rear demister (handy for dodgy areas). only downside is you loose the rear demister, not a problem where i live!!

lol , that some one will be me . its not your box design that was the issue , just the power for the amp but apart from that it was fine. and yes teh pic make it look like there is no space but the box's sit quite back , just under the seals for teh boot lid. (no water isssue).

there are quite a few theard's on box design's for cab's.

and for record i am an electrical engineer and have been working with high voltage power cable upto 400,000V for 11 years, so i know a thing or two about voltage drop and wire sizing

anyways i was thinking if you mounted teh amp else were then you can have 2x12" or 1x15" , just an idea ,lol but if you do this then i still say thicker cables. also are you using low level inputs (RCA) or high input (speaker line)? as cant see either!,lol

i know mate, only having a laaarf!!

dont need bigger speakers as this actually does sound very bassy, but not really suitable for dance music with punchy bass (as it almost sounds out pf phase) , it does sound good with dub style bass as its very deep and rich.

plus as it stands at the moment the bass drounds out the mid/high range as its quite hard in cabs to fit any decent sized mid range speakers without modding the door cards etc - a job i cant be 4rsed with!!

and in this configuration i only need to remove the power leads, signal lead and it can be taken out and out into my company car which has same set up - so bass in the company car too!!

this runs from (good quality oxygen free!!) RCA leads, they enter the amp from the side you cannot see.

anyway i must say the majority of your posts are very informative (just avoid house wiring )

heres mine!!!!!!!! loads of room in the boot!!!! Stuffed if i get a punture!!!! No spare wheel as the sub is sunk into the floor!!!!!

Not yet, pc at home is getting repaired so can't upload any pics yet. Should be fixed tomorrow so will upload some then, just need to remove the rear number plate surround and should be finished.

I was toying with that idea as well but in the end needed to keep the spare wheel (never know when you might need it). Looks a tidy install Does it rattle?

Na it don't rattle. i got the car with the boot build its not a bad set up all i wanna do is change the amps as these are only cheap things.. could do with a pair of alpine V12.

you have directed amps in there better than any Alpine mate
looks like a directed D400.4 and a directed 600d if my memory serves me right.
they do need alot of juice to make them sound good
as fo a cab set up i had 2 x12 directed studio 12's in 1cuft sealed boxes in the boot and i had quite a bit of room left as the boxes were designed to fit snug under horseshoe
boxes can be made by any good sound installer my cost a few pennies but looks the tits as for the amp location i would doo a boot build similar to Cassa-d but put a false floor in to accomodaite the amps but dont for get cooling fans

it has a false floor in it surrounding the box which is sunk into the floor and the rest is all boxed in and carpeted in one. I'll try and get some better pics

well its depends really on wat sort of music you listen to and how much boot space your willing to give up.

i had 2x12"in ported box in my e30 sounded crazy (youtube w12gti by deafening-sounds) , but then swaped them with a sealed 1x15" jbl gt3-15 only 300watts rms , but runned it at 500watst rms. and its gave the really deep and tight bass.

it is possible to fit 2x15" in an e30 but not in a cab , only in touring and saloon. as long as the box hight is no more then 16" it will fit nice and tight under the rear shelf.

You can fit 2 15" subs in a cab as my brother was using 2 of my vibes in his neon blue cab.....i wouldn't recommend it however as there isn't much room for air displacement, and it will rattle your car apart!

Best bet would probably be to get the box made for 2 12's either under the horseshoe or on either side. Most 12's shouldn't need too big a box and you should be okay.

wen i said i recomend directed to sum esle loads of ppl had a go saying how poor theyare because they were cheap!. even westcoast customs are better then alpine! as its made by orion and just restyled by westcoast.

fibra glass mould made from the spare wheel area then mounted it to a mdf floor so it air tight and strong ,you can get 2 12" in the same area but not alot of air space ....lol
