One wire touching the fuse wire, other wire to a clean earth (eg. bonnet rear catch)

I realised it was not the relay coz there was power there. so decided to take a look at the fuel pump took everything off, gave the sender and the pump good shake put it back on and way BINGO! it fired up. what a releif.
Thanku again guys for your time and advice. This is deff better than AA!!

Cool.
It may happen again though mate!!!. You can usually bang the black plate and it will start.lol

I presume you checked the connector for a tight fit.

If it gets worse you will need to change the pump

Try any bmw breakers like FAB etc. Usually around Ԛ£50 - Ԛ£60.

Dont forget to ask for an intank pump as some were external.

It'll definiterly happen again, usualy in the middle of no where in a thunderstorm, or the third lane of a motorway at rush hour.
Note that you have to undo the four small nuts on top of the pump mounting plate, and remove the level sender unit bafore you remove the pump from the tank, or it won't come out the hole.
There are two versions of the in tank pump - one with a connection for the fuel return pipe, and one without. The actual pump is the same and can be changed from one to the other with a little effort.
