Guys

Just wondering - I'm into the red on my fuel gauge and the light still hasn't appeared. A) does my car definietley have one?!! and b) when does yours come on so I can compare!!

Thanks

The Savaloy.

Mine came up when there was about 30miles left in the tank.

And it used to come up after the red. And I've never known an E30 not to have one.

Yep the needle goes below the red, then below the white bit after the red then the light comes on with about 6 Litres remaining, as maxfield said, about 30 miles range depending on your driving.

Thanks chaps. Didn't realise you still hadn't hit empty when the needle gets to the bottom of the red!

the sender unit for the light is not the same as fuel guage, so it is not related to the location of the fuel guage.

but generally they come on when the needle is quite low. to test put a can of fuel in the boot and drive till it comes on, if it does not come on then use the fuel in the boot!!

or lift the rear bench up and take the passenger side inspection cover off, undo the sender and with the ignition on lift the sender up and wait for the remaining petrol in the sender to drain whilst watching the light on the dash

My tank had dried completely and putting in 6 litres from a plastican the light went off. It came back on again almost as soon as I started the engine so I can safely say that the light threshold on mine (86 325i) is 6 litres.

I've only ever seen mine on once in nearly 5 years. Needle had gone well below the red. When I filled-up, it took 55ltr IIRC, so had less than 10ltr in when light came on.
This is why I no longer drive an E30......

It comes on solid at first then when you really push it it will start to flash at you, and that means either stop very soon or get ready to push :D

Thanks guys! It looks like I've been filling up very early (and thinking 260-270 was my average per tank) as I wouldn't let it get even close to the bottom of the red before putting petrol in.
