i have a 1.8is cab and im thinking of doing a throttle body conversion which will have 4 yamaha r1 carbs bolted to the inlet manifold. i was wondering if any 1 has done a similar conversion??? is it worth it and what sort of bhp will i be getting from my stock engine???? i am also wanting a set of schrick cams were would be the best place to get these................cheap.lol i've heard that they are quite expensive??

TB's increase torque and obviously throttle response over BHP.

A while back some M3 throttle bodies went on ebay for £150, IMO thats a pretty ok price lol I'd have been happy to buy em.

Thing to do is cost it up and firstly find out how much it'll cost, would certainly be an interesting thing to do and a good engine mod.

I would, If you don't then you will have to run a suitable air box and keep the standard AFM.

Standalone systems like Megasquirt let you loose the AFM and are almost infinatly adaptable to future mods, they also give better throttle response but they take some setting up to get the best out of them, Megasquirt is DIY-able but a rolling road operator who knows the system will be needed to get the best results.

TBs and a set of hot cams would increase the very top end power a fair bit but may sacrifice drivability (depending on how big the TB inlets are.) Running standalone would be the best option, but in order to run them to their full extent you'd have to get a properly designed plenum, adjust the fueling/throttle linkages and of course have an adapter to fit them to the block. It's a hell of a lot of work and wont be a cheap and cheerful mod if done properly (unless you can do everything yourself).

This website may be of some use: http://www.diymiata.com/irtb.htm Although for an MX5 the principle of modifying the TBs is exactly the same.
Not in E30s any more :(

If you're going for Megasquirt or similar then why bother with the carbs? Keep the fuel injection. I think a lot of people think about ditching injection for carbs to get more power but in reality injection will give you more, at the very least the same, power. With the injection you'll get the power and economy.

I guess it's to do with the old school sticking to what they know or could afford from the days before hacking motronic or cheap standalone systems came along.

They absolutely are,
google each one and you´ll see.
With great challenges comes great engineering.

TB's all the way, less internal restrictions than carb’s and with them using computer controlled injectors rather than jets and emulsion tubes with extra accelerator jets, they control the engines fuelling with far greater accuracy.

Carb’s, in the case of the Weber DCOE's on my old mates nova sport go out of tune too, his was on the rollers about twice a year and even modern super bikes are ditching carb’s in favour of TB's

There are a few standalone management systems that you could go for. I reckon your best bet is to find a local tuner and use whatever system they are familiar with but any decent tuning place should be clued up enough to do a good job with whatever system you choose.

If you want to go DIY then there various depths you can go into. Buying a standalone kit, wiring it in enough to get the car running then take it for tuning, all the way to building a Megasquirt from scratch, fitting and tuning yourself.
