Welcome to the zone. Suggest you look for a late touring, K or L plate if you're looking for a 316i - tin worm is what kills e30s and those at least will have been exposed to the elements for less time!

Hmmm... Hard to say really, not a lot of info in that ad. There's loads of info on here regarding what to look for when buying an e30, think the 325 sport buying guide is still stickied somewhere but it's mostly relavent to all e30s. But basically, rust, rust and more rust is what you want to look out for - footwells, anywhere in the boot, scuttle panel, wheelarches inside and out are all places where they go and it will rarely be worth welding up a 316i. Don't know much about the M40 (316i & 318i) engines, other than the hydraulic tappets wear and rattle. Mechanically e30s are pretty strong and reasonably easily sorted - but don't buy a nail because I said that! Usual buying rules apply - if it sounds like it's about to fall to bits, it probably is.
If you're prepared to wait for the right one, there are still plenty of decent e30s about.

if its close go and take a look!
check for rust, most common places are, rear arches, scuttle panel, pull the carpets back in the boot and check inner arches, there are more like behind the glove box (seller might not like you pulling his car apart though)
welcome to the zone by the way!
