Whats the biggest size speaker you can fit in the stander places front and rear on the e30. I dont want to start cutting things and having tacky speakers on show. I just want to inprove the sound quality as much as possible. Thanks

rear you can fit 6.5" with some help from a stanley knife but if you dont want to cut then 5.25 and fronts are 5.25

yep , its easy to do just use the speaker grill and take teh grill off and draw around the hole in the middel as this will give you the prefect size hole . cut it out with a sharp knife.
heres my back shelf which i cut out for 6x9 a lot more work but well worth it.

This is a daft question i know but how do you go about gettin the front speaker grilles off? I had a go but heard some loud creaks so stopped. Do other panels around them need to come off?

There is a screw in both of the kick panels which needs to be undone, and then on the passenger side you will need to unscrew the bonnet release aswell. It might be easier for you to drop the glove box to get access (open the glove box and push out the 2 plastic pins holding the straps on)
When this is done it should be easy to get the kick panels off.
I think thats everything?
