snapped bolt on maifold:(

hi guys my 325i cab has been making a ticking sound for the last few days so i decided to take a look tonight. anyway there is a bolt missing probley snapped off on the manifold. anyway can anyone post some infomation regarding this subject does not matter how small cost for repair ect.. and on another note im missing the guard that sits on top of the fan could i be losing cooling air there explaning my overheating issue after a good run? like i said any help from you guys would be a bonus. cheers martin.

u need 2 remove the manifold and ave a good look if it is snapped then use a stud extractor on it and replace the gaskets as 4 ur over heatin i doubt it very much that the missin guard on top will make that much difference

cheers richard ill do that. my radiator looks fooked anyway my brother is going to put his radiator onto mine on the weekend and see if there is a change? maybe this will solve it. the oil cap is very clean no crap in there.

changing the gasgets easy but the stud could prove hard work dependswhere itssnapped

before you take manifold off just take look with a light, and see if you can see one in there... it may have just come loose (possible)

I had two dissapear completely a few weeks back!!!!

Broken manifold studs are a whole can of worms. To repair your broken stud it means taking the manifold off and this is a gamble in itself.

The problem with removing manifolds is that the studs go weak over time due to the excessive temperatures they are exposed to and also the temperature changes. When you try and undo the bolts, if they don't round off then they snap. I have been very lucky in the past and had one pretty much fall off but it's rare.

If you have any snapped studs that break off flush with the cylinder head then you'll need to take the head off to get a machine shop to helicoil a new thread into the head.

For the sake of a little ticking (unless it's really bad) then I'd live with it as it could end up costing hunreds.

I had a snapped stud on my head on the inlet side. I drilled a hole in it and inserted a stud extractor which also promptly snapped. Fearing a new head I took it to the machine shop who removed it by spark erosion. Came back fine and didn't need rethreading. Cost Ãƒ”šÃ‚£25 tho

Bear in mind I had my head off and stripped to do the cam anyway. If you take it for spark erosion you'll also need to strip the head due to the gunk they immerse it in.

It was in the finish a waste of money as the sodding thing is cracked now anyway.
