hi new to this but have been offered a 1991 740i automatic but wont go in to reverse says it is the gear rod has come off and it will take 40 pound to fix do you think he is telling the truth

no the gearbox is knackered more like it, it's from the sealed for life era and the fluid has probably never been changed and it's had enough!
