Tweeters

I'm not into audio perfection, but want the additional 'spacial' quality that tweeters provide. Now I know I could probably hunt down a pair of oem tweeters pods eventually, but the Nokia speakers are rubbish so they would have to be changed anyway. So, I'm looking at Kenwood ST30s, which look as though they'll do the job and having had Kenwood stuff before, I suspect the quality will be good. They come with a mounting kit and it would seem that they can be surface mounted to the blanking plates where the oem pods would go.

Would these be relatively easy to install? Bearing in mind of course that I've the technical ability of a string of freeze-dried spaghetti

if you drill your mirror blanks (where the oem tweeters would go) there are already cables running up to this location for tweeters (can be hidden so dont think you dont have them if you cant see them straight away).

Once this wire is connected up you can either just attach the other end of these cables (in behind the footwell speakers) to the terminals of the footwell speaker (not really advised) or get a set of cross overs (these split the lower and higher frequencys of the sound and send them to the respective components).

Also for the money you are looking at for those tweeters I really recommend you dont get them, and get this set instead (I bought from this seller and can highly recommend):

This comes with everything you need, including cross-overs for not much more in cost, and I know other zoners use these speakers and all have recommended them

This set also comes with mountings for the tweeters so you can easily fit and angle them in the mirror blanks, I will go and get a picture of mine in a minute if you like?

ive got those in my e30. the speakers in the kick panels by your feet and the tweeters in the proper bmw mirror mounts. The quality is immense, i would definately recommend them! iirc, when they first came out there were about £120... or was i lied to? Apart from that ive now blown up my older pioneer ones in the back now because they arent as good as the infinitys

I think that was the original rrp, although it was quickly at 100, but you really cant go wrong for £48 delivered or whatever they are. When I ordered mine from that seller I got them next day aswell

If you have lots of cash then the bmw mirror mounts are good, but seeing as though there is a set in the for sale section for £50 at the moment I think they are a complete rip off

When I have managed to clear my main pc of some B******ING virus I will put a few pics of my tweeters mounted in the standard mirror blanks, I happen to think they look quite nice!

Cheers Stu. I've got relatively new (8 month old) Pioneers in the foot well and back shelf so despite that speaker combo being f'ing good value, I'll pass on it for the time being. However, they sell the tweeters separately for £29.99 - the same price as the Kenwoods and I've read that Infinity are very good so I'll go for those. Mounting them onto the mirror plates won't be a problem - just ferreting about trying to find the right wires. Still, I've got 3 weeks off for Christmas so I can take my time

If I was you, ebay the pioneers and take the whole infinity set, or get the infinity set and ebay the drivers that come with it? Might be able to get everything for less than the £30 plud del that you will pay for just the tweeters. (im a poor recent graduate )

Use that thread I linked to in my first post for help getting the tweeter wiring sorted, made my life so so so much easier after looking around for well over an hour without thinking to check on here lol. You will have to take your footwell speakers out though as everything is behind them (im sure you know this lol).

You should be able to get them in and working quite easily in a couple of hours though and then enjoy them for the 2weeks and 6 other days you have off

DavieP you need a set of passive cross-overs with your tweeters anyway (as is included in the infinity ebay set). I'd also recommend an amp to really create the larger sound image you are after.

Dave I also reckon you should buy the infinity kit and install all of it then just sell your Pioneers on.The sound quality is excellent for the money.
As Toby said you will need the xovers anyway so makes sense really.
If you want me to fit them give me a shout

the price for teh cable is a rip off! and paying £50 for mirror plates with tweeter mounted is also rather high. i mounted the tweeter on the dash coners and 6.5 in the kick's and 6x9 on back shelf sounded great.

Good cable isnt a rip off, audiophiles generally recommend that 10% of the value of your system should be spent on cables as they do make a difference to sound quality. I was lucky though, I got mine for free when I bought my speakers

Just woke up and while making a cup of tea, decided that there's far more sense in getting rid of the Pioneers in the front and replacing them with the Infinity combo. Came on here and read everyone's comments so I think I'll go with it. Tony, I take it that this was the set up that you meant when we spoke on Saturday? I will need some help mate, but after Christmas/early in the New Year?

I had the older version in my last E30 and although secondhand when I fitted them they still sounded very good.

£5 per meter is silly , as cable thickness does help , but also what it made out of. i guess its just me as i always buying in trade so 100metre roll will be about £25.

£5 per metre is quite a lot, but I didnt pay for mine and it is really good cable. Morat I suggest you get this stuff, its probably more suited to a car as its a bit thinner, but still v good stuff:

it depends on wat your running really you want the thickist cable to the speakers, but its funny ive seen cars running 4 awg to 6"x9" i was like thats just over kill! the wire going to the coil is only like 1/4 the size.
