ECU problem...
Moderator: martauto
Hi, i have an '89 325 sport, a few weeks ago i fitted one of Ant's upgraded chips and the car would not start. I replaced it with the standard chip and still nothing....I have spoken to Ant and he has given me help and advice but he does not know what is is, I then put it in to an Auto electrical shop and they looked at all the immobiliser/alarm wiring and found nothing-petrol is getting to the engine, but no spark...they reckon it is an ECU problem and the only way round is a new ECU!!!
Anyone out there know what i can do-or does anyone have a spare ECU I could try....? If it helps I am in the Cheltenham area if there is anyone near me.....
Really pissed off with this as love my 325 but dont want to spend nearly a grand on fixing it!!
Cheers
Steve

A custom or standard chip should not damage your ECU m8.
All an eprom does is give data/list of comands to the microprocessor and that tells the rest of the circuit what to do.
Have you checked the eprom chip you fitted is the correct way around.
Have you disturbed an imobiliser has these are usually located next to the ECU.
Go back to the ECU and check all the connections to it and near it are secure + check the chip you fitted. It only takes one bent leg or the wrong way round etc
Also check no pins on the ecu or the connector have been pushed back!

I know it shouldnt damage...the auto elec peopkle looked at the immobiliser/calarm and must surely have made sure that lot was ok.....?
Will have a look in the ECU again and check no damage to the pins, sure it was put in the right way as there is a little cut out and that matches with the cut out on the board.....
is there any way it could have shorted the whole ECU out?
Did notice when I took ther ECU out that there were bare wires from something wrapped around the bolts that hold the ECU in - seemed live-prob for the alarm or something.....
Could it be the OBC immobiliser?
cheers for your help by the way

Not sure what they are mate. Could have something to do with it though!
You could do with plugging in another ECU just to confirm. Find someone on this forum who lives in your local area and is willing to swap ecu to confirm.

Yes its the same ecu. The map on the chip is different but should still fire the engine up.
Your 325 ecu is a 173 and the 320 a 172 but the unit is the same. its just down to the different chip installed.
