difference between the 316 and 318

apart from the obvious one being a 1.6 and the other being a 1.8...is it just the block thats different?? and is the 318is different again??

If we're talking m40s then the only difference between 1.6 and 1.8 is the crank and the ecu.

the 1.6 is a de-stroked 1.8 with same bore etc.

whats the difference in bhp between a 318is and a standard 318 ??

1.8 m40 is 110bhp, 1.8 m42 is about 140bhp

Another difference that i can think of is the throttle body and MAF apperture diameters,the 318 being about 10mm larger than the 316.

316 M10 engine 1800cc with carb. 101bhp

316i M40 engine 1600cc with fuel injection. 102bhp

318i M40 engine 1800cc with fuel injection. 115bhp

whatever you read none of these engines will be making book power by now!

IS is a much better engine, it may only have 20 or so more peak horsepower but it loves to rev and they're strong compared to the m40s.

right i think i got it, i currently have a 316 m40 engine, so the only difference between that and a 318 is the crankshaft? is the bore size not bigger? bigger pistons etc...?

next question, what works involved in putting a 318is engine into my 316i? can i use the same gearbox prop exhaust ?? guessing the ECU and loom is different?

pretty straight forward, you will need to weld a bracket on for the IS's coil pack, ecu will need changing to an IS one, not sure about gear box

You can keep the gear box, you cannot use the same exhaust. If you do change the gear box you'll also need the iS propshaft. M40 to M42 = piss easy

Of the few iS's I've seen dynoed most seem to hold their power pretty well. Cook318IS on here has seen 140bhp from his standard 170k+ engine.

316i bore x stroke is 84 x 72mm

318i bore x stroke is 84 x 81mm

why hasnt the forum set up a m42 swopping guide yet. i know that theres not alot to do with the converstion and it is abit less desirable but may be useful as alot of people who are doing/thinking of doing the swop??!!

I know what you mean punk-sy. I am about to tackle the m42 conversion and though re-assured by how easy everyone tells me it is I still would rather have an write up. If no one has done a write up before I do it then I will!
