EEK! ITS THE M44 I THINK ALTHOUGH ILL HAVE 2 CHECK,
IS THE M44 FORGET IT MEANING ON THE WHOLE JOB OR JUST FITTING IT TO THE E30 GEARBOX, THE 316I ENGINE IN THE E30 AT THE MOMENT IS VERY SIMILAR TO THE E36 316I ENGNE AS THE E30 IS THE LATER 1993 YEAR, JUST WONDERING WITH IT BEING OVER THE CROSSOVER YEAR WOULD IT MAKE THE JOB EASIER? OR AM I JUST TOTALLY CONFUSING MYSELF NOW? LOL THANKS

There were no changes to the E30 when the E36 was introduced. No upgrading of the E30 to use any of the new parts (except an early form of EWS).
The E36 iS basic engine is the same as the E30 one, but most of the bits bolted on are different.
The most practical way to fit it is to have a complete scrap E30 iS engine, etc. available.

I did this change.
The main thing I found was the sumps are different, you'll need the E30 sump put on the e36 lump easy enough to do straight swap.
The inlet manifold is different tho don't see why you can't still use it but may want to look at using the e30 manifold?
Some of the engine plugs were a little different IIRC, so if using the E30 loom needs some thinking when it comes to connecting it up.
I think the mounts are different too.
Best to have the e30 lump as a donor if you have one.

I may be very wrong, but I've read somewhere that the E30 manifold flows better at high revs while the E36 one give very slightly better lower torque. You can fit the E36 manifold into a E30, but the E30 manifold wont fit into an E36.rix313 wrote:The inlet manifold is different tho don't see why you can't still use it but may want to look at using the e30 manifold?

E36iS engines have knock sensors dont they? And different inlet manifolds (different shape, same thing, so E30 one can be used).
I heard that on a few 318iS fan sites when looking into them. Could be wrong though.
I have no ideas about what a knock sensor is... but i heard it a lot in the disscussions about differences and turboing them. Apparently, if you want to go down that root knock sensors help... but thats all i've heard.
There are some others, but all interchangable or not necessary to bother with. Other than that they're pretty damn similar. Internals are virtually identical.

Uni is killing the project.

M44s have knock sensors, but with reference to turboing, they have cast cranks so aren't as desired as the forged crank equipped M42s.
Not in E30s any more

I sure hope so! Ill be going to pick the engine up on Sunday, does anyone know how to identify the engines apart? Or where the engine codes are on the block? Cheers people
