How to tell if Donor car has EWS fitted or not.

The easiest way to tell if a donor car has ews or not is to check the cars key blade colour

Silver - NON EWS

Bronze - EWS

Alternatively is to check the build date

pre 01/95 NON EWS

post 01/95 with EWS.

On my donor E34('95 'N' plate) the ews gubbins was hiding behind the small cubby thingy just over the driver's knees.It is a black box with 'EWS' printed on it....you need this box and everything connected to it,including the black ring around the ignition lock and all the keys,the keys have a tiny transponder within the casing...EWS,engine wont start??

which means "electronic immobiliser"

cars built in 01/95 can have or have EWS as well, as I found out. (just in case there is confusion with the pre/post)

413 ECU with a maroon label doesn't use EWS, 413 ECU with a silver label does.
