had it running today, very rich & black smoke. i need to make a exhaust system and get a wide band lambda kit to assist me with mapping the ecu. also the bonnet will require some adjustment, like a hole cut out to clear the turbo.

Oh fair play dude!

That's gonna be awesome! :D

Are you able to get the M50 management to read from a manifold pressure sensor though?

i am going to start of with 10 psi and see how it goes, the injectors are from m3 evo so i suppose 320 bhp could be a realistic goal. the price of fuel in the highlands is ridiculous so i cant boost it too much. does anybody have experience of these cheap t3/4 turbos? i am thinking it may be poor internal quality, although it looks ok. any comments/help welcomed.
cheers

You should speak with james3320. He has a tourer with a m50 turbo running 451bhp and 400ftlbs. Altho its off the road at the moment while he strengthens the rear end to stop the diff ripping out the floor.

Just a thought, if you've got the S50B32 injectors, they're supposed to run at 5bar rather than the usual 3bar.

That's not necessarily a problem, but start adding boost and the pump might start to struggle as the fuel pressure needs to rise along with boost.

i see, thanks for that info, i thought they would be 3.0bar. will my 325i external pump be able to do 5.0?. i thought that the fuel pressure stays constant, but the fuel injector duty increases along with boost.

I don't honestly know if the pump will be able to keep up, but it should be easy enough to upgrade I'd imagine.

The little pipe from the fuel pressure regulator to the manifold essentially tells the reg to keep the fuel pressure at whatever the reg is set to, above manifold pressure.

So if you've got 1bar of vacuum and a 3bar reg, the fuel pressure will be 2bar. That also means that if you've got +1bar in the manifold, the fuel pressure will be 4bar.

The reason the fuel pressure needs to rise along with boost is that, if we take an extreme case, if you had 3bar fuel pressure and 3bar manifold pressure, no fuel would come out of the injectors.

Firstly I guess you need to track down the 5bar reg to go with your injectors, or switch to the kind that run on 3bar.

the regulator i have is adjustable, so a better pump and base pressure of 5.0 bar might be the answer. can you recommend a suitable pump?

have you got any more pics of the Exhaust Manifold? intrested to see how you ahve converted it to a turbo setup.

Also what is the overall comp. ratio with the 2mm plate??

Think you can buy Walbro external pumps cheaply enough too.

no idea about compression ratio, 2mm was the thickest i could get away with due to the length of the timing chain. sorry no pics of manifold, i can stick one on at the weekend. ordered a walbro pump today.

its not rocket science, the m50 can take boost on standard comp ratio. i decided to fit a decompression plate to allow more boost, i am on a tight budget so decided not to strip the bottom end. this engine is just a test bed to see what works. soon i will be building another m50, non vanos with machined pistons and steel rods, then buy a proper turbo and wind up the pressure.

your compression is in the high 8´s most likely now, which is totally fine.

sounds good to me!! hopefully everything will go smoothely, i am a little worried about the mapping but i suppose as long as the mixture is kept ok and i make ignition advances a little at a time all will be well.

Not really that easy.
If you don´t have a solid base ignition map or can´t come up with one yourself,
you should simply take the car to a dyno tuner in your region and have them tune it.

To many people think tuning is just adjusting the mixture somewhat and using a ballpark ignition timing,
if the timing is retarded you´ll burn your valves in no time. Let alone run the risk of knock and detonation trying to run SAFE!!
Then there is air temp correction that people very often don´t have a clue to setup .
With great challenges comes great engineering.

if it wont then can anyone suggest an alternative?

Don't know about the cover fitting the flywheel, but I think the BMWs all have a 10x29spline pattern on the gearboxes....although that's not really much help!

S50 uses a larger diameter clutch so the answer is no, although it will slide onto the input shaft

You'd be better with an M20 fly/clutch, uprated covers are available but I dont know where from

hi everyone

not much been done over the last month or so....but today got back into fixing the car again.

i replaced the original 325i fuel pump with an external wallbro 255lph one.

changed the antifreeze and bled the cooling system

finished making all the intercooler pipework.

just need to make an exhaust and squeeze the front panel back on. :D

had the car started tonight after work, exhaust coming straight from turbo, it sounds good!!!

set fuel pressure to 5bar, it runs much better than it did on initial start up, revving up freely now,

still smoky but nothing major.

i have been reading a bit on here regarding holset turbos and am thinking that the cheap one i have might cause a bit of back pressure and therefore heat. what do you think? if i keep the boost low at about 10psi will it be a problem?

cheers :D

also does anyone have experience of strengthening the rear diff mount?

just a picture of my downpipe that i am making,

it is 2.5 inch mild steel tube, cut and welded to create the bend.

it then steps to a 3 inch 90 degree bend which i purchased.

i am going to make the rest of the system using 3 inch tubing and have a 1 metre length of perforated tube to make a rear silencer.

i will take some better photos tommorow with it removed.

hi guys

over the last wee while have been doing a bit of work on the car
got the front end back on, and i have fabricated a very crude bonnet bulge to clear the turbo,
a bit of black paint and its looking very scary.
i have been mapping the car on a bit of road near my house and i have to say that the car is going like a bloody rocket :D it goes like a normal m50 to about 3000 revs then it takes off! i have the boost set to .75 bar and there is no sign of detonation.

more updates soon as i get the diff replaced and my polybushes fitted.

good evening,

i have been thinking that i now need an oil cooler due to the increased heat my engine has to cope with.
am i right in thinking that i can swap my filter housing for an s50 type with provision for this?
can the m50 filter housing be drilled/tapped to fit a cooler?

anyone?
