Don't quite know why people want to f*ck their ears up by putting low quality, inefficient speakers into tin cans and then have them play at about 130dB whilst they're sitting 4 feet away from it, but hey - there's nowt queer as folk.

It's not quality stuff compared to what else there is on the market, which isn't actually designed for the in-car market. It's not about raw power handling. Often, the higher the power rating, the worse it is.

Just because it can "take" 1000W doesn't mean it can reproduce it all as sound. It'll get warm, which uses most of that power that you put in. Which is why your headlights will dim with the bass.

It doesn't take that much energy to move a piece of thin paper, certainly not 1000W, so it goes elsewhere - it heats up the coil(s), which is why they're always vented.
miniblob wrote: Lol @ minicooper!!!!! I can pee pee louder than 130db!!!!!!!!! Would love to know what you class as a high quality, efficient driver?? You must have some serious equipment that i only see in my dreams!!!!
Considering 140dB is a 747 at takeoff and 130dB is the point of pain, I doubt it... 160 dB and your ear drums are no more.

The JL 12W7 has an efficiency of 86.2dB/1W/1m.

I have a pair of 15" UNBRANDED drivers here that have an efficiency of 97dB/1W/1m.

3dB gain is twice the power, 10dB gain is twice as loud. It's MORE than twice as loud, and it's unbranded. Cost me £75 a piece.

Car audio subs are big heatsinks, really inefficient. By that, I mean that for every watt you put in, you get very little of that as sound, most of it as heat. That brings me onto another thing - that car amps aren't what they say. 1600W amp? More like 400W.

I have some pants 6x9s in my car - I don't need anything decent in there, the exhaust makes such a din that I can't hear bugger all anyway. I've got a high fidelity, very efficient system in my house with 3 2500W Class H amplifiers, though.

Easy bro - we're only playing with ya!!!!

I know all that - was only having giggles!!!!

130db is piss easy on a car system though, but you're right, the quality will be naf generally!!!!

And as you well know, it's not all about volume bro - doesn't need to be efficient to be of a very high quality!!! Just means you need more power to reach similar volume levels - if volume is what you want!!!

I've got some 'unbranded' bass cones made by tang bang - cost me about a tenner each and are very nice!! They are the exact items used in current B&W speaker setups (which cost a lot more than a tenner Lol!!)

Not all car audio is inefficient heatsinkage!!! There is some good stuff out there, if you are prepared to pay for it (for the brand names), or improvise a little!!!!
And as for the amps - depends if you take 'max power' at face value - never trust anything other than rms (obviously) - there's a site called ampguts which has a lot of gear listed with proper test results, showing what you really get - and at what voltage!!!

db gain and db volume can be different too - a 3db increase in volume is twice as loud (i.e 133db is twice as loud as 130db)!!!

Bin them 6x9's - get some components up front and a nice little amp if you're bothered!!!

Class H!!! Mmmmm!!! What amps are they??
I've got a pair of Lab Gruppen FP2600's at the mo!! The quality is sufficient for the JBL & Jamo speaker combo's i'm stuck with at the minute!!! They're all about volume really though - use them in decent clubs, etc!!

I do apologise, I was on cider last night! Hence why I just waffled on about efficiency...

I guess it's generally a topic that winds me up, when people ask me to make their amplifier more powerful... Yeah, I know all car audio isn't blocks of aluminium, but there's a heck of a lot of tosh that is. ;)

They're in my E30, they came with it. I'm going to be kitting out my E28 with some Hi-Fi gear I should imagine. I'm going to make the amps myself. I'll probably have an actively crossed over system, rather than running everything full range. I know the best place for a tweeter is in the centre of the point of radiance (in the middle of the midrange driver) but I prefer control over balance.

My Class H amps are QSC. They're big juicy buggers, not THAT good quality, but they don't sound half bad. They reproduce the input at the output, that's all I need!

LabGruppen, nice! Pricey... I like Jamo speakers, actually. I'd like a pair of those Hi-Fi ones with the tweeter waveguies.

I was going to get some Macro-Tech MA2400s but didn't have the money at the time.

No worries fella!!!

I assume you're a talkaudio member??

You obviously have too much spare time if you're gonna make your own amps!!!!!
Did amp design at college - i'll make some one day - if i ever grow up!!!

I do love those lab gruppen amps actually!!! They pricey for a reason!!!
They just make things so easy - so light, compact and powerfull!!! They're even deisgned so you can whack the gains to max without any clipping (as long as you've got a good source!!!
Will power any load too, auto cooling fans too so doesn't overheat in most environments either - even after 8 hours flat out in a dj booth!!!!
Pounds hard too!!! Have used the same Lab/JBL setup in a club as i currently have in my bedroom Lol!!! The neighbours love me!!!

The jamo's are X3M 8's - a lot better than i thought they'd be - i only bought them 'cos they were offered to me at a silly price!!
Image

Those crown amps are naughty!!! That's what JBL themselves recommend!!
We used one of their top amps to power 6 of our 18" subs in my mates club!!! They were all unbranded subs, cost about £130 each - never heard any other club with such amazing bass!!!!!

We had the only venue that could compete with my car!! Lol!!!

Was thinking sealed originally - might stick with that - i'll see when the time comes!!!!

It is for the touring!!

Might start with a nice sealed install for it and then get a ported box later aswell and see what i prefer of the two!!!!

Ive ported mine at the mo, had it sealed it was punchy and tight, now with the port it hits the right low notes...!!

Im sure you know, but make sure you build the box to spec, otherwise your not using it to its full potential!

You should have heard it in the back of a range.. with that breathing space... People were turning around, before i turned corners

Lightweight amps - I used to have a Citronic PPX900, had to get my spine reinforced after carrying that!

Glad you've mentioned a good source. One of my PET HATES is red lights on a mixer...

Red lights on a mixer!!!! Lol!!!!

I've come close to marching DJ's out of a club for that before!!!!!
Why do most dj's assume louder is better and whack all the gains to max!!! I prefer to let the amps do the work 'cos then it sounds good!!!!

Still amazes me how many dj's have no idea how a sound system works - and i mean not even basic enough knowledge to connect a turntable to a mixer!!!!!

Might try a ported box first for the 13W7 tbh!!! I've had ported 12's before and liked the sound - and i do want it to play low!!!
Don't worry - the box will definately built 'properly'!!!!!!!!
Still reckon i'll end up with a ported and a sealed box and have to keep swapping for ages before i decide!! Lol!!

Well, they don't realise that if they stayed in the green, the engineer on the limiter would give them more headroom anyway!

Amps should be run at max gains anyway, since they're input attenuators rather than "volume". Not alot of people realise that, hehe. Not say you don't, of course!

Ported vs sealed - horses for courses, no definite winner really. I'd go for folded horn! :D:D:D:D:D
