I just drove whatever I could get flat out like every other kiddy I knew. Life's too short to go giving money to insurance companies when you should be spending it on drinking and smoking, drugs and birds. Honestly, kids today!!

I think you may be overestimating. I find the E30 to be very good at road holding, even when it goes, the slide angle is manageable. It's direct enough to be very informative, so it's easy to get the feel of what the car is doing. I personally wouldn't go out and thrash any car before getting to know how it handles itself, at least a little bit. I'm sure Imran is just the same.
Having said that, my first car was a Capri. Baptism of fire somewhat.

i'm 23 and my 325 2dr sport is only 500..1 years no claims. Basically, as the others have already said, if you think they'll drive it, put their name down and see what the quote does. That's with Bell online. Get the quote online, select only the options you really need and then give the company a call with the reference number.

For some reason when I was getting quotes I entered my reg in and was given a very different price to when selecting the same options in drop down menus. Just rememeber it was an organic squidgy bit that made the database - it Can be wrong and dont be afraid to question it!

From my experience, you're best off setting a day aside and ringing around every insurance company you can find, as quotes vary massively.

I'm not sure if it's my area (South East London), but I've rang all of the companies that have been recommended in this thread and more, and yet literally could not get a quote lower than £3,000 in my own name on Cat 1 Alarmed, Garaged 1.0L VW polo which literally costs £60... And that's TPF&T with my grandmother (who is handily a vicar) named on the policy.

For some people (like me!) fronting (having the policy taken out in your parent's name) is the only way to bring insurance down to a sane level - The same £60 polo? £932 A E30 318is? £1200 A MK3 Toyota Supra? £1400. The only difference is that the policy is in a 38 year old woman's, and not a 17 year old male's

Insurance makes no bloody sense!

Don't do it, it's a mug's game. Apart from anything else, you basically give the insurance company carte blanche to take your money for zero risk. I'm reminded of Casino, Ace Rothstein only bets on 'sure things'. Then you injure someone, wreck a few lives and find that you owe more than your lifetime's earnings in damages to various parties, not smart. With insurance, remember no-one ever made money out of doing favours.

yeah direct line are good however you can't have any mods until you're 25 (unless they've changed it?). I'm with them, 21, no ncb, 325 touring, £600

much more than that if i go with someone else and want any mods

Oh, it is my mother's car, honest .

But seriously, after several months of research there doesn't seem to be many alternatives... Hell, After hearing insurance drones causally tell me on the phone that cover in my own name will "be 9 monthly payments of £353 a deposit of £900", I wonder why I should bother get covered in the first place... But hey*.

*I am in no way implying that I would drive without insurance

There's always fleet insurance. For a while I was going to get insured as a driver on my dad's fleet. Then he was a tosser and told me to bugger off. So I bought my own car and did it all myself, the ultimate "f'ck you, dad!" - but I work part time for a delivery company now, and I'm insured to drive their vans under fleet. If I had that company as the registered keeper of the car (not the legal owner) then they could insure it as part of the fleet, and it'd cost 'em about £50 extra a year, and I'd be totally covered.

adrian flux for me, they always offer a really good price cheaper than what I can find online anywhere. usually by 200 quid or more.
there are plenty of topics on this, also why insure anything other than a sport, alpina or m3 as fully comp? seems wasted cash to me?

I just read that fronting thread. Stupid cow, but heres a question. How do the insurance companies decide you are "fronting" I am 22 and insured as a named driver on my dads X-type jag. I drive it once every 3 months if that! What is to stop the insurance company that, god forbid, I prang it, to say "We don't believe your the main driver so we won't pay"? It seems to me that what is being said is that you are basically being banned from having an accident, genuine named driver or not.

Also, a couple of years ago, my car broke down. Being stuck at work 9-5 Mon-Fri it was difficult to get it to my mates garage as I didnt work locally (about 35-40 miles away). My old man was off work at the time, so didnt need his car having had an operation on his hand, the net result was I ended up using his car daily for about 5 or 6 days while he got it sorted for me. Were I to have had a crash, would this have given his insurance company grounds to say, this did not count as genuine irregular use? To put it into context, were my old man not off sick, he would be using his car every day (doing approx 100+ miles a day) and I would have had to have got to work by other means!

www.mymotorquote.com im 17 0 no claims 2 months on my liscence and i after spending 4 hours shopping around i got a quote from them for £2400 (316i 2 door) which isnt too bad considering my first motor clio 1.2 :( was £1990 so give them a try they seem to be quite good with younger drivers in saloon cars  (always remember to add a female parent or family member aswell as a a named driver :))

I think you must remember not to be scared to haggle with insurance companies. With my Alpina I coud not just log online and get a policy as it's too rare and not well known to get on the main sites. Remember membership to car clubs can get you discount and as my car is used as a dosmestic pleasure again it knocks loads more off.

Another big eleiment is your job , beliave it or not when I was working for a brewery as a cellearman my insurance was heaps cheaper than when I worked for Barclays bank. Working for the NHS really made my policy price plumet.

The big problem is the younger drivers can geet a classic policy so your getting hammered really badly. I saved a fair few pennies by paying the policy right up front and just a few other little details can shave heaps off.

My Alpina even gets money off because I put a specal cover over it which has a tie which takes a pad lock! With the current climate insurance companies are wanting sound secure business and with people pulling in the purse strings you need to be prepaired that it will not be feasiable at such a young age.

The BMWCC is brilliant with the discounts it can get you with stuff like insurance policeies. Also try with brooker companies as they may be able to do you a goo deal. Or try gettign the car put on with another policy and you as a named driver as anothe roption and just keep the insurance goign on a cheap pile of shite to keep building your NCB up.

Jeez, insurance sounds expensive in England :/
In aus atm we pay $259 AUD a year for first party, with dad as the only driver. If they put me down for when I'm 17, it does up to $650.. Around 280-300 pounds?

Is insurance a legal requirement in Australia? I know in some countries it isn't.
