how much power could i expect by having a 318is remapped (not just chip the propper thing) also what gain could i get with the above and also puting an m47 crank in (and use normal i.s pistons)

Not sure about remapping, someone will let you know soon enough, but with an M47 crank maybe 160bhp? Find out :D

that could be v v v nice! i think the i.s pistons would need to be skimmed or with the extra stoke they would hit the head! does anyone know if this is correct? i am new to stripping engines and am very interested in having ago (as have been offered a 318is e36 m42 lump for £60!) also how much are m47 cranks worth? i should imagine there are not many about! could the bmw-rover 75 derv engine crank be the same as the m47? as i was told the it was the same engine but different/more restrictive head and turbo etc? thanks and sorry if am asking silly questions but am new to all this!

The cranks are the same in the BMW/Rover blocks, M47 cranks are few and far between, I've seen 1 for sale on eBay, but that's about all, no idea how much it went for though. Look in the E30 Wiki secion for the M42 stroker sheet, gives specs for rod lengths with different piston/crank combos.

A good chip can be reasonbly close to a good custom remap but fraction of the cost. As for stroking all that effort and expense for small gains resulting in a less revvy motor seems unworthy too. Cost effective solution is boost it you get more for your money really if you avoid going overboard with big boost and fancy stuff, keep it standard and simple.

Longer stroke doesn't automatically mean less revs, it's the way the gasses flow that effects that.

no by stroking in essence your moving the power and torque around the rev range to gain something lower down you loose in middle or up top. Saying that there is exceptions to the rule, within reason you can improve overall performance but this is usually with engines with more than 4 inline cylinders.
