Which engine are you going for? The M10 or the M30? Turbo'd M10s are nice, M30s with blowers are MENTAL!

Bolt on job for the M30, don't see an inlet manifold though, but would be a good starting point.

not sure as i haven't seen a turboed m30 in a rhd e30

i know that turbo cars need a larger exhaust mainfold to aid the flow(i think anyway), there for the steering rack issue may arise.

on most lhd cars this never matters, and there the only ones i have seen with m30 turbos

otherwise it may well be the m10

or i have been thinkning about m3/m5 motors, or the v12 out of the 750/850 just to be different

You can't use the 745 turbo stuf because of the steering coupling unfortunatly

I was looking into the TCD turbo kit when i had my old E34 but it was the same problem.

Both the 745 and the TCD kit mounts the turbo below and to the rear of the manifold,i think you would need a custom manifold to place the turbo on top and to the front of the manifold. You then could make the down pipe to fit around the steering coupling.

I'm guessing the same applies to the M10 ?

doubt it..........not for 10k for just the shell before the mup goes in

i was thinking more aling the lines of a 300-500 quid 316 or something then i could use the m10 block (or bin it) and jsut do some weldding on it myself.

then either drag/track it or get some more money and then drop it into a mint shell or make it into a mint shell at a later date.

it wouldn't be a road car to start with as i would struggle to insure it for a year or 2 so it would be purley drag/track with plenty of maintenance to keep it minty.

then think about putting it in a mint rolling chassis

Si316 and gwnleym10 (spelling?) are the men to talk too, both are in the M10 tuning world and they'll be able to help for sure.
The one fact that does interest me with regard to the M10, having also had one, is that they are direct decendants of the F1 BMW lumps pushing 1400hp!!!
Good luck on your quest for boost, mines about to be realised

M10's and m30's are pretty similar in design, its often said that a m30's are just m10 with another two cyclinders...

Many m10's have been turboed, however i have yet to see a right hand drive one being done. Do the Aussies drive on the right hand side? if so then, m10man has a friend who has one.

What i know.....
Converting the 1.8 to 2ltrs, lowers the compression of these engiens, making a perfect base for a turbo conversion!

The main problem i see is the stearing coupler, from what i can work out there are a few ways around this,

Remount the engine, so it sits lower/further back (the front half of a m42 propshaft i have just learnt will help with this! as its shorter...)
Then there will be loads of room in fron of the engine for a turbo, especially if you have a electric fan.

The exhaust header will be the biggest expense, unless you have a go at making it your self. There is a guy on www.e30tech.com who has, just search m10 turbo, should find him.

Maybe a blower would be easier, a mini one will aparently work pretty well with an m10

well, the fact that they are bombproof, cheap and readily available was what got me thinking, and the same goes for the m30 too

it also crossed my mind baout the f1 1400bhp thing too..........hehehehe

seems rude to make it smaller, might make the blower feel inadiaquate mate, and we can't have that now can we

So the exhaust header is the problem with RHD Turbos? So a custom manifold like the M20 FI boys are doing would solve the problem? Is there actually enough room to get a turbo and all the plumbing into an e30 with an M30 in it?

yeh u can,,,,, im sure

u have to use a turbo which is above the manifold in any case... not like some cars which have them below

Doesn't dips 335iturbo run a alpina B7 manifold? That sits the turbo below the manifold, by the engine mount.....should help simplify the exhaust route too...... with having the turbo topside of the manifold the exhaust has to be bent around the steering and through the gap left between bulhead and the engine.....glad mine is already done :D

Dependent on the size of the turbo and whether or not you're willing to relocate the oil filter, you can get one in below the manifold and have an easy exit path for the gasses.

Is the oil filter not on the intake side of the block?

Why would you need to move it? Or were you refering to the photo and saying it's a good choice if you didn't want to move it.

Gibbering a little now lol, been up since 4am with 2.5hours sleep..

Oil filter is below the exhaust manifold, can get in the way for the downward facing manifolds.... :D

Yeah, i'm gonna try fitting the oil filter in it's original position, but doesn't look hopeful. Also a bit worried about the oil getting scorched inside it by the exhaust heat.

Also might be a pain in the arse replacing it!

Mines staying were it is for now, but the oil pipes to the cooler will have to be shielded if the exhaust runs down past them. Hopefully my resident GURU Ant has sorted this already and I may end up having a backwards facing turbo!!
TBH I don't car if it ends up being mounted on the roof! I NEED BOOST NOW!!!
