Should be able to pick up a nice E30 325, maybe a sport for that price ?
Previously owned loads of old E30s, E34s, a few E36s, E32s, E39s and an E38.

Currently in a diesel Audi - miss me old E30's....

Get an old boxy Volvo 740 turbo, then whack the boost up. New intercooler and some decent piping/exhaust should easilly see 300+bhp on stock internals winkeye

Porsche 944 is tempting but it must be costly to service it, even if your doing it yourself right?

Not much different from an E30 or an E36 imo.
