Hi,

Im looking for some advice. My friend bought an E36 M3 evolution about 2 weeks ago, and sadly lost control of it a couple of days ago, driving it through a hedge.

The car is a bit of a minter, with full BMW service history, only 52k etc, see the add below from when he bought the car:

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/751639.htm

He was insured third party only, and is wondering whether to repair/break/sell as it is. The car is a very nice example, and prior to the accident had no faults.

It now has a dented front wing, door, rear bumper and rear quarter. The exhaust system is also damaged.

I have told him to repair it for sure, but could you guys shed some light also please? Im thinking a good/near factory repair will cost him arround 2k. Am I correct?

People are offering him 2k for the car as it is, but this is way under its value! What is the value do you think?

Pics:

(for the record the car was being driven sensibly, but hail on the road and the brow of a hill on a corner caught him out).

Any advice appreciated. Quotes for a fix? Any recomendations?,

Thanks

To be fair i'd get it fixed up, 2k should see it sorted. Sounds like a previously minty low mile example

Doesn't look too bad

I could see that costing £4k quite easily. Door and associated gubbins is probably £600.

Insured 3rd party only was a bit crazy. I am all for it up to the value of about £3k, but 7k is a bit of a chunk to lose.

Put an advert on it for sale in Norway.... E36 M3 is worth 25+ grand in Norway and one who is crashed is not cheap there because of its good bits.

Just my two cents

What a terrible pity. A good one of those is a really great car. A wing will be @ £50 used, same for a Coupe door.

A couple of grand will see it right.

I was presuming it was going to be taken to a bodyshop or the like who will probably only want to use new parts? M tax on panels adds up. Either way, its going to have cost him near miley e46 m3 price in total once he is done.

Thanks for the replys.

Just to stress, it wasnt crashed by a young boy racer, its a very nice car and a shame, but these things happen. 3'rd party wasnt ideal but hes only in his mid 20's so insurance was still high on a group 20 (?) car.

It seems you lot think roughly the same as me. I will pass on what you have said, and fingers crossed he will repair it. If not hes looking for sensible offers, but hopefully he wont sell.

Thanks

I feel for your mate, but to insure a 320 bhp Beemer on 3rd party only is madness. The car looks tidy enough and as said a couple of grand should sort it out....He'd be mad to sell it for peanuts.

That needs a rear quarter, a second hand door and wing and someone who will do a nice job.

I'm guessing he paid good money for it so to through it away now would be silly tell him to get it sorted. I've just had the same with my e36 but it was front end and someone smashed into me. I was lucky enough to find someone of e36coupe.com who was breaking one in the same colour so I was able to get all my bits for £400, that was bonnet, wing, slam pannel, gril, fan, rad, air con rad, plastics loads of stuff and the best thing is it's the same colour.

Stripped I recon you;d get about 4k for it pretty easy by the time you do engine, box, diff, kit, seats loom, and all that stuff. I saw an engine and loom on the bay from an M3 go for £1200 early this year so people offering him £2k are unrealistic.

If you can source a door and wing the same colour which will cost say £100 to £200 then all you've got to worry about is the rear quater. With that in mind fix the bloody thing. Tell him to visit e36coupe as well and post on the wanted section, also look up Jag Sahota and say Charlie (who came up to see him 2wks ago) said to speak to you, his pal breaks them all the time.

I can recommend a dam good body shop too, Plough Lane Coach works in Cheam Surrey. It's a little out of your way but these boys are sh!t hot, they do all the MK1 Escorts for the Harris and their work is perfect they will not send it out any other way. If he wants a cheap job he'll have to go some where else cos they won't do it and spoil their rep.

Good luck mate.

chisel - I agree with you, he has spent over 7k on it. Could you please pm me the number of that body shop? Appart from my friend I would also like it, Surrey isnt far, I drove to Sheffield for my last lot of bodywork to be done!

If you send me the details I will give them to my mate, thanks.

Paul, I would also get a propper four wheel alignment done after the body repair as it looks like the n/s/r wheel has took part of the impact and just a slight nock can put camber/toe etc out and may even show up suspension damage or buckled wheel.

All the jobs that came through our bodyshop doors had alignment done if there was damage near a wheel area or if any suspension was removed to cary out repairs.

Cheers Barry, I will pass it on. I know your workplace got closed, but do your mates still do bodywork, but for a different company now? If they do, do you have their details?

Just got your message paul, that will repair all day long, especially with a good second hand door and wing and a new rear quarter panel. he has paid too much to consider breaking it and since it is one of the more desirable M3`s regards spec and colour it would be a waste too.

send him up to sheffield, ill sort it for him :thumb:

Based on damage my own E36 M3 received from clipping a wall( no where near as bad as that one above BTW ) that will be a mission to repair

mine needed complete NSR suspension, there was minor creasing to the boot floor and damage to the underside, zaust etc however externally there was little to show how bad the underside was( out of line bumper and small dent in rear 1/4

just my 2P Paul :thumb:

Agreed, the first few pics looked an easy repair, the 2nd lot of pics show a different story.

The bootlid the reason for the broken window? Nealry every E36 coupe I pick up with any kind of rear damage has a broken rear window, the corners of the bootlis are so close to the glass.

dont be too hasty lads, that rear end has a twist in it but you would be suprised what can be achieved with a little pull on a jig in the right hands, its going to be a little costly but with a second hand door, wing and rear bumper and a new rear screen (possible second hand again) and a new quarter panel it will live on.

Its the cost that will sadly kill it my friend.

Agreed, it's starting to look slightly more complicated and costly. Tell your pal to buy a solid E30 and donor what he can, engine and all then scrap whats left. The end result will be the mother of all E30's

That is a real shame :( Friend of mine did practically the same thing to the same spec car (estoril with grey leather) and was third party only. Took a fucking loan out to buy too 8O

I'd PM that dude that suggested breaking it in Norway for 25 bags go to be worth a punt surely. Sell the smaller items over there and bigger bits over here OR see if someone from Norway will come over and take the whole car, you'd be surprised as they come over for smashed up cossys and the like he might get lucky.

I feel for your pal :(

I think someone will have that as a track car no problems.

I'm shocked at how the value of those has dropped though! When I bought my e30 in 04. E36 Evo's were still around the £15K mark.

I get that they aren't as popular as E30 or E46 cars. But they are still damn fine automobiles with a fantastic engine!

shame about the evo though... she looked the nuts in estoril!! oh well buy it off of him for a som and rape it!... i sense another s50b32 swap in the force!!! vader interior will go in the e30( i @ucking love that interior ) jog on the rest of the panels that are in good condition... but what a silly billy for insuring the evo third party fire and theft... lives and learns :D

i start the bidding for the s50 @ £500!!
