the only thing specific to e30 about this topic is that i have a six pot m20 2.5

just wanted to say that the only real mod ive done other than polishing my wheels is a sebring back box (so far) and the noise is just sublime :D it just sounds right. my dads e32 735 just sounds right too..... (ive got my eye on the engine)

my mums 4.8 x5 sounds good dont get me wrong. an S14 sounds fantastic......

but a BMW inline 6 is the Carlsberg of engine sounds.....

thats all i wanted to say :o:

Newer BMW 6 pots sing, the older ones sound like proper mechanics :D I find both have their merits :)

I love the M20!
171bhp from a 2.5 twenty years ago,
Volvo's new S40 makes 168bhp from a 2.4
Kia's brand new 2.4 does the same.

Looks like car makers modern technology has finally caught up to the mighty M20.

M20s sound very nice.. IMO the 320s sound nicer and smoother than the 325s... untill you give the 2.5 the full beans then

Older engines sound soo nice. Newer beems are ok, but the old ones are fantastic...

Too bad they cant make the M20s anymore. Good sorting out in the factory to make them as good as they can be whilst standard would just be superb...if they still made them.

Not good is it, especially as they probably have more cams and valves too.
But manufacturers are going to be more bothered about emissions these days, and retaining low end torque to better cope with the 17 tons or so these cars probably weigh. Especially manufacturers as exciting as Kia or Volvo.

A well serviced m20 with a decent manifold & exhaust sounds awesome. Doesn't mean I'll be putting one back in my car, but they do sound blimmin good!

I'd be interested to know how the fuel economies compare.

My E30 stats came from here: http://e30world.com/specifications/BMW-E30-specs-table
The Kia stat is from a Kia press release, and the Volvo one is from a Volvo brochure.

My Volvo brochure is also US spec, since it came from Florida, so Matt's numbers are correct. Mine aren't.
