Good effort Jon , fair play bud

have issues with mine, the fcukin intercooler is just not gonna fit, will fit superb on a pre facelift so Alex will have no probs even mounting two (cossie units)

not decided what way to go, will chop some more metal out and see if she'll go

Funny you should say that cos I had a poke around last night and I really can't see anywhere ease to fit them! :(

Think if I take the metal valence off it might liberate some space, but also get the feeling I'm gonna have to make up something to cover them and the oil cooler a bit.

All good fun!

Woo Hoo!

The pipe and bends for my manifolds and the rest of the exhaust system turned up yesterday! :)

Will try to make a start on the manifolds this weekend although probably won't get anything welded up.

Also made a spindle for one of the TBs last night, couldn't be happier with how it went! Will post some piccies next week when my mate's camera gets back from it's holidays :)

Well you should get chopping to get those intercoolers in. I need a flange off the downpipe so i can create a 2 into 1 bit, don't suppose anyones got one for a bit of beer money?

Once i've finished the downpipe and tweeked a few other bits and pieces it'll be time to take it down the road!

Might go and get some 3mm steel and try and create myself a flange, not looking forward to this job, but I really wanna drive it so i'm gonna have to shift my ass into gear.

Definatly get some pics up TB. Yours, along with everyone elses is gonna be a monster!

I've got my old exhaust system kicking about if the flange from that'd be any help?

Only really need it to use as a pattern for my new system at the mo so lopping a little bit off the end shouldn't be a problem :)

Hey that would be spot on, how can i pay you for your troubles and delivery, paypal, personal cheque? I'm sure we are talking about the same thing but just to clerify its just the simple 4 bolt flange with the 2 exhaust ports.

I love the zone i'm gonna have to do i real good write up on this project to put a bit back into the zone i think, as loads of people have helped me out.

Yeah, the flat bit of steel with the two holes to which the pipes are welded and then the 4 bolt 'oles :)

I'll try and hack it off this weekend, can't imagine the postage being much at all!

When you've got it off mate post here and i'll pm you my address.

Got some cheepy h-lfords universal ignition leads (will do for now!!)
so finished everything that needed doin filled up all fluids
for the first "atempted" startup today :? :? :? :?
it cranked! all sensors looked ok on laptop but it kept back firing and popin but would not start so i spent next few hours testing for sparks, swopin ignition leads about thinking the v6 that the coilpack came from must have a diferent firing order to our straight 6!
It does but thats not the problem! looks like the triger wheel i used off an e34 m20 is not 120deg btdc as setup on the m3d! 8O so in morning goin to try mesure angle and have another go!

Hey Len,

I sent a cheque for a late M20 trigger to someone on the Zone so that'll hopefully turn up next week sometime.

Might be worth setting the ECU to 90degrees BTDC, seems that some VW etc have this setting with the 60-2 wheel?

Thx alex
Ive just mesured from the second missing tooth to the trigger with an old kent cam timing disk your spot on! it is 90deg :D hopefully if i go put 90deg as the referance it might start!
also just realised the standard ignition leads (type that go to front of camshaft) fit the coilpack very nicely  :D

Hope it works Len! You got any way of recording the goings on?

Did just spot that the HT lead from the coil to the dizzy fits the Cavalier coil pack perfectly. Unfortunately it looks like I've got a cheap dizzy cap and leads though becasue after that they're the larger type.

Just taking a break from making the manifolds!

Tried to take a picture with a shite free camera, but it doesn't work :(

Will try to post some piccies before the end of the day :)

Its probably a good thing that it didn't crankstraight away as it will have got fuel back round to the injectors if you played with any fueling side. It will also have got oil around to your eaton, thats if it needs an oil supply??

Keep working at it my friend, the result will be awesome i'm sure, a wineing(spelling?) m20...

I'm very jealous of all of your customisable standalone ECU systems, i wish i could justify one. When i see yours at meets sometime i think i might get persuaded.

Its alive!
Alltho it did die after few seconds!
it almost seems the same as when i left the airflow meter unpluged when i had one! so im guessing it must have something to do with the map sensor.
ive got a freind coming over later today with a digi video thing! so i will try to post a vid tonight!
any sugestions on the dieing?

assuming you still have the ICV connected ?

TBH to get it to idle nice i'd open the throttle stop a little until smoothness returns, you cannot map an engine that wont idle nice eh M8

mines in slightly less bits now but still a long way from finished

get that vid up M8, good luck with it all later today

Excellent!

You lucky git Len!

Wouldn't be something like too much cold start enrichment or it not decaying away soon enough causing the engine to flood would it?

Anyhoo, here's my progress today, sorry about the lame quality photos!

New wheels on freshly lowered car (did this lot yesterday):

Image

The exhaust manifold components laid out with a couple of pipes:

Image

Two of the pipes tacked to the head flanges and bolted to the head just so I could be sure everything was gonna fit before committing to cutting up the rest of the pipes:

The fruit of best part of a day's cutting and grinding at bits of stainless tubing tack welded together:

The tacked manifold in the car :)

And some piccies of Turbo No.1 hanging in it's new home :D

Whaddya think? :)

Len, can't wait to see that vid!

What you got left to do Ant?

I'm SO chuffed with today's efforts, can really see all the little bits of string pulling together now :)

Yeah, it'll kind of act like two seperate exhaust systems down to about the middle of the car where the cross over is to be :)

Lookin good Alex ! nice manifolds dude !

Len, if your ECU is running a variable TPS, maybe the setting for the ADC count is off kilter causing the flood clear mode to be enabled possibly?

As for mine, well...... its about 80% completed, still got intercooler issues due to the size, I have literally chopped it up now, I have found the main grief seems to be the lower structural crossmember, obviously its gotta stay but I may trim it down and add some gusseting where material is removed.

MSnS is fully wired in now, car wont run though as my Rs232 cable has a pinout missing ( 8 off 9 are loomed only  ) and I need that pin for the comms  I need to set the closed throttle ADC and WOT ,plus burn the Base map into the ECU.

PITA this modding lark.... Lovin it !!

once the MS is runing the car I'll install the turbo hardware, thats the easy bit as I havge already made the downpipe and flange etc, just nuts and bolts TBH.

I decided to get the MS 100% wirking on mine before attempting Fozzys, I dont need my car for daily @ the mo, he does so a non runner is literally a non starter for him.

Is it possible to install your intercooler horizontally and duct air up into it?

My ol' man suggested that it might work for my cossie coolers and it looks to be a pretty good solution as it maintains ground clearance and keeps the front of the car looking standard :)

Seems asthough BMW were one step ahead too as there's a sort of vertical blanking disc just above the drivers side headlights that can be popped out ready for some boost piping :)

JON!!!! Just cut the flange off for you mate, send me a PM with your addy when you get a mo :)

the hole is pre cut for the filter drier on A/C equipped cars Alex, but I defo know what you're saying M8, you know the boost pipes are going that route

the ducted cooler is a good idea!!, just been re-reading Corky Bells book it talkes about IC location, and the intake duct can be as small as 1/3 total IC area and still be as effective @ cooling as a FMIC, the key is forcing all the air through the cooler rather than around it, there is a supra mentioned(inc a pic) showing a huge IC mounted just as you've discussed M8

some food for thought indeed M8

thanx everybody for your sugestions :D

No vids tonight me mate didnt bring it :(

so instead i had a go at geting last of the wiring ie: fan relay, s/c relay & switch done.

Alex its looking good mate one thing i cant make out in your pics! what are you doing about the oil filter? remote i presume?

Its quite a lerning curv all this mapping lark!
what ive decided to do is use my "ol-faithfull" colortune! in the morning when my neighbours are at work  its a wee bit LOUD!!

Ant ive got this intercooler fom a nisan 300 turbo it sits in the front wheel arch and has a dirty great scoop on the front about the right size (if foglights removed) to fit behind the brake ducts!
i can post a pic if you dont get what i mean.

Oh yes, piccies are good!

Will definately be going for a remote filter! Sandwich plates don't seem to cost all that much, it should eliminate the problems of the housing cracking that I've heard of, and also make it easier to change the damn thing!

Now what should I do tonight, make a start on tacking the other manifold together, start mounting the ICs, or get on with machining the butterfly spindles?

SO much to do!

managed to get it to rev a bit more this morning!
looks like the mixture/injector setup is all wrong!
it also sounds like ive got a knocking from the block  will look further into that later! with any luck its the front pulley!

I know what you mean about changing the filter, and the spark plugs come to think of it. It becomes a full days work instead of twenty mins.

Just about to pm you my address Mr Brown.

Alex,

Those manifolds look very tidy, nice work, I have a pic of a m30 lump with identical manifolds on my home pc, I'll dig it out....

Just hope I too can report back soon on progress, have done most of the pre-fitting jobs now, just the main parts to fit.....damn I wish I had more free time

I sit at work thinking about getting home and working on the car!

Jon, just got your PM, will reply to it when I get home :)

Certainly be interested to see the M30 manifold piccies! Not that one with the external wastegate is it?

Still, no free time off tho...

Misses and little one are off on Holiday all of next week so I may have a few hours spare, really got to get my head round the ECU side of things, seems to be the only bit I'm unsure on, the rest is easy....I hope!!
