These two problems started recently at around the same time on my 318is. The clutch judders on take off unless I raise the revs to 2k before dropping the clutch. I do not get clutch slip, only judder. Also the rear left wheel bounces when I get wheel-spin at take-off, eg when taking off/turning from the brow of a hill.

I'm guessing I need a new clutch AND a new rear left shock absorber.

OR, could there be a root cause of both problems? Someone mentioned a worn out propshaft vibration damper (guibo) could cause clutch judder - could that also cause axle tramp?

Thanks in advance!

Have you checked the state of the rear sub-frame/rear beam bushes? They can sometimes cause a tramp effect if they're bad... I may be way off the mark but worth checking.

The fact they arose at the same time indicates hopefully just worn rear dampers. Try sticking a new pair in and see what happens as it sounds like they need replacing anyway. They are fairly easy to do at home and there's a guide in the 'Articles' above (referring to replacing rear top mounts).

Rubber bushes all over are wearing out on these old cars unless they've been renewed.

The rubber guibo can make the propshaft judder so unless it's been replaced in the last few years that would also be worth replacing anyway. Sounds like clutch has gone to be honest. Is it worse when hot?

Axle tramp is usually caused by shot axle bushes, in fairness they have been thrashed by the M42's power for the last 18 years or so :D

axle tramp occurs when the car 100% its caused by too violent take offs!

Hmm, I don't think my driving style's changed. My money's on worn bushes...
