Now I know that the accepted way of doing this is to use an electric fan. But,I have all that space between my E34 radiator and the front of the engine...I have tried the standard fan with viscous coupling and it fits,almost... the fan fouls on the radiator frame. If I was to trim about an inch of each blade it would fit.Any thoughts on the downside of this?

as long aas you cut each blade the same the balance will be OK, issue is.....
any axial fan HAS to have the shroud quite close fitting to work effectively, otherwise the airflow will be accelerated off the blade tips, not pushed backwards as intended , this has a major negative effect on its cooling ability.
M10 fan is smaller and has less offset so would pop straight on, just the shroud to cut n shut to suit maybe ?
TBH electric is the way to go....

Isn't there a thin viscous fan that was originally fitted to the 324td e30's? That might do.
I vote for a decent electric fan though.
