Small update
Change of direction on the exhaust manifold front. The newly acquired M52 manifold went in the post today to another zoner and i'll hopefully be receiving a modified S50 affair tomorrow.
Hoping i'm going to get a break on this project now

The seller told me he was using an E30 rack and it was very tight on that, hence the unlikeliness of it clearing an E36/46 rack, I just couldn't own an E30 with an E30 rack fitted!Jhonno wrote:Should clear the e46 rack the same as an e36 one..

Me & her indoors are friends again
To be honest she's the one pushing me to get it done now "so that we don't lose another year to that piece of scrap on the driveway". She's got a point mind you

beemerlad ive been watching this post since the beginning, your progress has slowed down over the last few months much to my dissapointment..... I have loved watching this conversion, i live in leeds i understand its cold and raining, i run a workshop in guiseley (leeds) if you need somehwhere undercover, warm and with ramps, tools, welder ect give me a shout, i cannot help you get the car here though. Always happy to help a fellow zoner. You would have to save your work for the weekends though as i have a bussiness to run. Scott.

Scott, that's an incredibly generous offer. I don't have a way of getting the car there really and i only get weekends on it now anyway with the dark nights. But I may get back to you if i get too poncey and can't stand the cold.
Thanks again
Lee

Have you set yourself any sort of timescale for this resto/tidy up or is it just finished when it's finished? Hell what am I sayin? these things are never 'finished' lol.
Looks promising and it's good for the soul having a project like that to get stuck into. I'm just trying to decide how far to go with mine

Was just wondering if this S50 manifold will actually allow for gains over the M52 configuration? Hadn't ever thought about that as I was just looking for a plug & play solution.

Well would you believe it, I actually did a wee bit to the car today.
Fitted the electric fan and that's all wried up save for the main plug which needs swapping for a different type. Bolted the front valence on properly and fitted the headlights and grilles and bumper etc so the front end looks like a car once more.
Then I started losing daylight so I got the back end in the air on axle stands so that it's ready for me to crawl under next weekend and fit the driveshafts and finish off any odd jobs at the back end.
Then I plan on moving forwards and getting the gearbox mounted up after fitting the gearlever mechanism and then the prop. Then it will be time for another play with the exhaust manifold.
Finally, today I sprayed the 2 front seats black. Got dye all over my hands which is not coming off lol. I remember I wore a pair of marigolds when I did the carpet
Sorry, didn't get any pics though

Yeah it makes a change for me, mind you I've been pre-occuipied with the Soarer needing attention for the MOT or messing about with the Golf.GrindCulture wrote:Good to see someone got something done today
Knowing that Malcolm (daimlerman) is almost done with his conversion too is kind of spurring me on. Really would like to have this on the road by Easter.

Not quite painted them mate, it is proper fabric dye, but it was a more council affair of using a houseplant spray bottle with black dye in it, which managed to deposit a fair bit on my handsJon_Bmw wrote:You painted the seats black?!?

Now the soararse is back in the fleet (will be Monday when it has some rent in the screen) I can carry on making some progress with this project, but the Golf is needing some TLC - got new injectors to fit and also take the inlet manifold off and split it and fit new gaskets, fit new braided lines and try & cure the hunting at idle and general running rich stink that it has

Lee,
Spotted this on my travels:
who's using your photobucket pictures then?
Or have you sold the engine?

Now I could be wrong and he might have meant to send me the picture for some other reason but I can't check now as he logged off. To me, that looks like a 6-pot, not like an M42... I do hope he's not gone and bought the wrong engine
