If a 325i sport tech2 is £2000, what sort of condition would you expect it to be in?

Dont expect too much of a sport for that money unless if your lucky and find a bargain.

You may want to push your budget to about 3.5k onwards

im not being funny mate, i come and looked at yours in the week and for 2k i would want something that i could use as it was with mabe some bits that been doing, but yours wants best part of a respray the engine bay needs some work, ie the cps with the speker wire, and the rev counter. and it sounds like everything is falling apart when you drive it.
and i didnt ask but why didnt you turn the lights on when you drove it when it was near dark, just made me think there was something to hide.

the main things that put me off was that speeker wire, the rust, the rev counter and the noises when you drove it.
the car just felt like it was on its last leg and the sort of people that want a sport are people that love there cars, not someone who just wants a cheap bmw, they all have e36's
if you sorted some of these bits out i would say it will sell easyer. if it was mine i would g odown the scrappy and get a toolkit and a cps and try refit the seats and stuff so it didnt make loads of noise when driving it, fix the rev counter and see if you can get a silver door and boot lid cheap. it then might sell for 2k

i might be going over the top as it is only 2k but by the time you spend a grand and more on yours you could get a nice one for 3k and just get in it and use it.

but if your willing to drop on the price i might come and do a deal with you, just on how much you will drop and what bits i can get hold of as time is a big prob at the mo for me

i only got £3200 for my old one and that didnt need anything doing to it, the body was mint the seats were mint m3 heated leather, and the engine had just had a new bmw head and loads of new bits all over.

I would expect a £2000 Tech2 Sport to need a similar amount(+) spending on it to get it somewhere near to being a reasonable car

Bearing in mind quite a few people on here reckon one will break for £1500ish.

I had a look at a few priced between 2-3k and was not impressed ! (that was a couple of years back thou)

They will, possibly a bit more but it will be a long and painful affair!
Really depends on the condition of the kit and spec of the car....

£2k will not be a nice sport unless you get lucky and the seller knows little about them but these kind of sales only tend to pop up in the local free ads.....

Mine does need a bit of work, but won't be any where near that price when I finally manage to take some pics and offer it for sale, it is a tech1 though, which are better and rarer in my opinion. If an MOT and 2 days work will make it 2 grand+ I might knuckle down and don the old girl

Sadly the Tech 1's aren't worth the same as the Tech 2's

Tech 1 will not command that kind of money unless it's showroom condition with zero rot.

as csl says a nice one will cost at least 4 grand all in so if you haven't got it don't buy one. A tech 1 will be cheaper and if you can find a good one is a significantly better car.

2k sport = 1 nasty gog.

Ifyou have 2k , buy a tidy 325i, put a slipper on it replace suspension and bushes and IMO your 90% there.

I bought an '89 Tech 2 in Feb this year for £1900 with 120,000 miles and T&T, it looked superficially good but it's needed rather more welding than I was expecting, but drives pretty well.

If you're willing to do the work yourself it's worth buying at this price as a rolling restoration, just expect to have to do some bodywork/welding and some mechanical repairs to get it to a reasonable standard.

I agree. I can't understand why Tech 2's command such high prices?

They don't look as pure as Tech 1's with the ugly bulbous bodykit, have a more 'bad boy' gangster image instead of that of an enthusiast (like your driving it just because its got leather and a BMW badge and girls like it) and aren't as nice as a pure driving experience.

When me and my mate finally finish restoring my Tech 1 in a few months I'm never getting out of it!!!!!! :D

I gotta say this but all the people who harp on about the tech 1 being vastly better are talking sh1t! There is no dramatic difference between the two! The difference in looks is just down to what is prefferable to any given person with neither being "better".
Ok the earlier engine may feel more lively but lets be realistic, the difference in performance is negligable, were talking fractions of seconds maybe in performance times but no real performance advantage, with nearly all sports having done 150k+ miles now and dont make factory power anyway!
From the factory tech 1's did have a better make of shock absorber (Bilstein as opposed to Boge on tech 2's) but how many sport (1 or 2) still use their original shock absorbers? We are talking 20yr old cars here!

Pure driving experience?! Take them dam rose tinted tech 1 spectacles off, get the dust pan and brush out to sweep up your pile of ferous oxide/tech 1 sport and wise up to the fact that the tech 2 sport is a more desireable car!

Tech 2 Sports have a lower ratio (3.91) diff compared to the 3.64 of the Tech 1 to make up for the low compression engine also.

I read on here that only early tech 1's had a 3.64. Early tech 1's also had 14" BBS.

I think you are right about the BBS but I've never owned a manual chrome bumper 325i without a 3.64 ratio diff and I've had a few. I'm not 100% on it mind, but I would stick my neck out and say im fairly sure only manual facelift 325i's had 3.91 ratio diffs.....

I'm talking about sports not any old 325i. Manual facelift 325i's have 3.64 as well.

Well I've owned 4 different facelift sports and they have all been 3.91 ratio, I've also had 3 tech 1 sports and all they were 3.64 ratio. All the 325i's I've owned over the past 12 years, chrome has always been 3.64 and plastic has always been 3.91 and auto's have always been 3.73 ....

Nope, all manual plastic bumper 325i's I've had were all 3.91 sport or not and the same for pre facelift but 3.64.
I've had a few switchable autos too (not sports) but they were all facelift and all 3.73

LSD or open diff those are how the ratios have been on all the 325i's i've owned, I've always checked as only the sports (bar 1 I let go for £1600 about 5yrs ago - they were from Cardiff!) have still had the LSD's when I've moved them on :D

Just checked in that book Everett wrote and according to that...

"For 325i, 3.64 and 3.73 on metal bumper cars including sport LSD, later sport uses 3.91 ratio LSD, Tourings and 325ix use 3.91 standard diff. 3.74 on 325ix auto. 3.64 used on standard plastic bumper 325i 2wd manual."

Well the bit about the iX is certainly rubbish mate, I've owned two of them and still have the others running gear which is 3.64 ratio and my touring was an auto which has 3.91* diffs on it :D
Never come across a facelift 325i with a 3.64 personally but it is a good book I have it too....

*sorry had to edit that, it is late!
