I used to have a 530i SE manual saloon with an M30 motor....

That was fast and had been very well looked after...

The 525iX SE Touring I currently have is nowhere near as fast as the 530, despite, on paper, having similar power figures, but it feels a little sharper and the grip is better...

Why would BMW go to the bother of fitting a steering rack to a 525iX yet steering boxes to all the other versions? :?

Very good question....

Exactly what we thought as, although the subframe on the iX is different to other models, the rack looks like it may well fit standard models....

Experimental conversion, perhaps?

I can't for the life of me understand why, in the mid/late 1980s, BMW with the E34 5-series and Vauxhall with the Carlton opted to use ancient steering boxes in prestige cars that were supposed to have a modernistic image, when the superior steering rack had been the tried and tested norm for most cars since around 1948 when even Morris Minors and Citroen 2CVs had them!

I guess they did it for space reasons in the engine bay, though you wouldn't think it would be a problem in a large car, or possibly because executives don't want steering feel and the kickback through the steering wheel that racks can give...steering boxes can be more 'refined' in that respect.

Nothing wrong with the steering box. The E28 has sharper steering than the E30.............
