Just checked my owners handbook and it says trailer load limit is 1200kg (for a braked trailer) and max nose weight 50kg.
Unbraked trailer limit is 500kg.
Maximum downhill gradiant is 12% (1 in 8.3)
So I would suggest that unless your trailer is less than 150kg unladen that answer is no.

If my 1.8 406 can pull my track E30 and trailer then your 325 will have no problems but of course from a legal point of view it will be overloaded.

the rules might say no but it would.
the 325i is strong enough to do it so i cant see why not? i went to a PBMW race at croft and noticed a 325i tourer towing a PBMW racer.
my tourer will be keeping its tow bar just incase. i really want a track car.

No national speed limit but if you go 5kg over your towing weight limit, you're nicked.
Can't see it happening, I doubt anyone would notice anyhow.

what do you mean by no national speed limit?? And how does one know what the towing weight limit is? Just from the handbook?Ian_M wrote:No national speed limit but if you go 5kg over your towing weight limit, you're nicked.

I was under the impression that the speedlimit for trailers is 55mph

Can't tow in lane 3 either.
Weight limits are specified in the manual and also on the VIN plate in modern cars. AFAIK it's not just a routine 3 points and £60 type offence either if you're over weight.
E36 is a better option for towing (325tds has an 1800kg capacity iirc). Weight limits aren't just made up, they're there for a reason. Towing at or near the braked limit is not a terribly pleasant experience and also leaves little room for spare wheels etc.

Something like a Deisel Mondeo, 05 plate < £3k has a towing weight of 1800kg, its what I am considering. Very hard to find a car for less that will do the job & be so cheap to run. Normal MPG 50+ and a low tax band.
Lots more choice & quite probably better ones if you dont mind the running & purchase costs. i.e. landrovers, 5 series etc..
Probelm with old cars is the brakes arnt upto it & the suspension is probably long past its sell by date.

Having used my e30 to pull a LWB Transit out of a muddy field, only noticing afterward that it had a 20ft trailer attached
, I would say that it can definitely pull the load!
Whether it has the mass and stability to control such a trailer at motorway speeds (60 mph for a single axle, 70 for a double, Uwe) is the doubtful bit. The e30, even as a Touring, is quite light compared to newer cars.
From a legal perspective, you're very unlikely to be pulled and checked. VOSA are much more concerned with LGVs. If you're driving sensibly and the train is behaving itself (so weaving or pitching) you should get away with it. Have any kind of accident, though, and all bets are off

towing speeds are 60mph for dual carraigeway, 50 mph for single carraige way (in national speed limit area obviously, otherwise it is as indicated by the sign)

The 325touring I'm considering is £350.00 - work needed for sure but that's OK.
Hmm £350 + £60 fine = a lot less than a volvo
Seriously though, I have seen a trailer take control and it was frightening stuff to watch unfold in front of me...
Northloop got a 530 for a song - that's what I need really...
