sometime standing on the scuttle with a foot at the back of the engine can help the angle too
thats not you is it Ziggy?

easy mistake i guess......sorry.
for anyone doing an engine swap, if you dont fire it up with no exhaust its not an engine swap. as jaffro said, its tradition.
even my little six sounded delightful and that was only on 5 cylinders.

Took your advice, slackened the mounts, gearbox attached and in she went.
Right, now so far, engines in, water is all connected, ecu in place and afm on.Tommorrow we are putting in new fuel lines, earthing the engine, and filling her up with water, oils, and diff oil
then shes ready to start.
Still got to do the mods on the wiring side for blower, elec windows and something for the starter motor?
Will take some more pics as where the car is on the ramp, mines is on the ramp, under neath me is an E36 m3,on the ramp next to me is a E46 ms cab and underneath that is and E30 m3 Evo 1 in black and it looks the "Daddies" compared to the other 2.

The green and black wire from the body loom needs to go to the small spade connector on the starter motor, or the windows will only work with the door open and the heater won't work.rav320uk wrote:Still got to do the mods on the wiring side for blower, elec windows and something for the starter motor?

Driftboy, sorry mat, but when you say the "Body loom" is that the loom that goes from the c101 to the fusebox??
And where on the starter, as both the bloody spade connectors are the f#cking same size as i found out today.
Its a starter from a m30 525i and is a lot bigger than the one i took off

Erm, not sure if the 525i one is the same but I used the easiest spade connector to get to from under the inlet manifold.rav320uk wrote:And where on the starter, as both the bloody spade connectors are the f#cking same size as i found out today.

Pics of the M3's

M3 Evo (Nice)

Diff in Finally

Exhaust Clearence after a bit of grinding for the flange

Engine in but not turning over F#CK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Starter motor issues are pi55ing me off now as the tw4t who sold them told me they were both from a m30 525.It defintily is a 8 bolt but the starter is not even engaging.Took it back out and works fine, so must be an issue down to the marraige of the teeth, so if anyone has ideas round this TELL ME! so i can carry on forward.

The only starter motor that will fit will be found on the following (assuming your using an E34 M30B35)
E32 730
E32 735
E34 530
E34 535
E34 M5 3.6
E34 M5 3.8
The above info was taken from my ETK. I didn't think they made an M30B25 I thought the smallest was the 2.8 in the old E28's??

CharlE30, i counted the teeth on the flywheel and has 115 all together, and the starter has 9 teeth, so not engaging, do you think i need a starter with 11 teeth?

2000cs
2002tii
E12
E21
E23
E24
E28
None of the engines wehere above 2.8 litre and the starter has a power of 1.1kw where as the correct M30B35 starter has 1.7kw. Even if you managed to get it to engage it wouldn't last long as it would be too underpowered.
I hope the above makes sense

Cheers, will have to poke around the garage for a starter first or engine out again and back in with the duall mass and origional starter

If you Got "Haters",Then your doing something Right!

I take it from this your not using the E34 dual mass fly? I'm using the E28 single fly with the E34 standard starter.rav320uk wrote:Cheers, will have to poke around the garage for a starter first or engine out again and back in with the duall mass and origional starter

if its an e34 m30 thne you can (but not for long) use an m20 starter motor.
Gall used 2 on his. he used one but the teeth were not very good and the teeth gave up. but then i gave him a better one which lasted for a good while. its not ideal as the kog that comes out fron the started is not long enough and only half engages with the cog.
it will start it and be a good swap if it was for a track car. the smaller weight and not needing to be started as much.
its not a perminant option for a daily car but i know it works.

Right story so far, tried 4 different starters today and there all doing the same thing, hitting the flywheel, so the the bloody things got to come out again, which i'm trying to avoid.
Is it possible for me to take the gearbox out without taking the whole lot out again, bearing in mind thewre are no top bolts in the g/box.

By the way, have you gat a modified 318is?????
Only asking as there a bit of a banter going on elsewher in the forum on 318is v 325i

I'm using E32 735 starter motor and a E28 M535i single mass flywheel with no issues.
The gearbox was fitted to mine with the engine already in and I had no real issues. So I don't think you'll have a drama on that front if you've got a pit or ramps

Well i'll let you all know tomorrow as the dual mass is going back in with the e34 starter motor, i've had enough now trying to source a flywheel from a m535i.I know i'm going to lose the freedom of the engine spinning quicker, but what the hell, just want to get in it and drive the thing now.

Rav, that manifold flange looks VERY close to the steering coloumn mate! why dont you chop it off and twist it 90 degrees then re-weld it? what downpipes are you using> i used some 535 downpipes from a E34 which went straight on with no clearence issues mate
Just sorting out insurance today and will finally be able to drive it to matey's garage for full check

Its the angle I took the pic at Blingsta, I have ground the flange down about 5mm but is about 10mm clear of the steering.
What have you done, chopped it and turned it?
Downpipes are from the e34 and i understand we chop it off before the front box and weld up to my origional s,s system.
My insurance is with Adrian Flux at 280.00 fully comp with all the mods

good price fella !! im getting crap quotes at the moment as im insuring it as a 2nd car but with no bonuses coz im using them all on my E46 cabby !!. as for the flange, yep, mine was chopped, twisted and re-welded.. then i get Torque exhausts to make me a custom 2.5 zaust system to follow from the downpipes... she sounds well healthy !
.. pics to follow as soon as i get the front tech 2 kit re-fitted! oh and a wash !

Cheers Karan, tilted the engine, took out g/box today, and put the origional one back in, connected it all up and he presto, she turns over no problem. So tomorrow I've got to put the inlet manifold back on, wiring loom back in and then fill her up with fluids and start her up without the exhaust. Can i heat up the flange on the exhaust manifold and turn it 90 degrees or do i have to cut and weld it.Getting close now, must say a "BIG UP" to BEEG,MATT and STEVE(Who had a bad burger and threw his guts up everywhere) for the helping hands on this so far.

Right, got the battery on turned her over (Without the exhaust) and she fired up first time, and sounded LOUD!!!!!.
Rumbled the whole workshop
.
All I got to do is the 3 wiring issues on the starter and c101 plug.
