no chance of daylight Mart as the clocks go back this weekend.
Only way we'd have daylight would be a saturday or sunday daytime meet and it's likely to be too full of bikes for them to want us there

What you want is a nice little snug with a log fire, homemade food, well kept real ale and a jovial landlord - somewhere where you can leave the cars outside in the cold and come indoors and enjoy the warm company of like-minded companions...Andyboy wrote:I'll not be there again - it's just too far to go plus the food and beer are f*cking awful.
Hmmm.
Not unlike the Barnes Wallis Inn* then, on the outskirts of Howden, where, by pure chance, the BMW Car Club is holding it's monthly meet this evening.
* Reliable rumour has it that it serves some very fine ales such as Timothy Taylors 'Landlord' as well as a gut busting Steak pie.
Would this be the type of establishment you are pertaining to Nikkolaas?

Advantage of Squires Cafe is location, big car park and we are made welcome. Snags are the factory beer and transport cafe standard nosh.Due to being a night worker,Friday/Saturday evenings are all that is available to me so tonight's do at Howden is regretably out. If other regular attendees at Squires feel the same as Andyboy and myself about the place I am up for trying a different venue, anyone in the area with any suggestions?

The New Inn (squires) does have it's place for all the very reasons that weddingcarman mentions. In fact it's a great place on a summers evening. It used to be where we had the Westfield meet and was a good pub back in the day.
Nowadays it merely serves it's purpose - but I'm afraid I can't think of an alternative.. so, as long as James carries on arranging the meet there I will be happy to attend.

This is what Squires looks like on a summer evening at a ricer meet, also the opposite field gets used as an overflow car park and also gets full. If you end up parked where I am in the soarer at the top there's no way you get out until late.

Is the location of Squires a problem for folk? If the general location is OK then I can scout for other venues for future meets.

For me the location is about as far as i want to travel. It takes just over an hour to get there from here.
I think the place is ok too.I dont go there for a nice meal or "Real ale" , i go to see the zoners and cars, the booze and dodgy food is a bonus.Well sort of

Can understand your point of view,I travel an hour or so as well, from the opposite direction!! Sure, the piccies of the ricer meet are great,we struggle to fill that top car park!! Perhaps,Lee, you could have a look around and see if there is another possible venue? Please,I am not knocking the OP for organizing the meet, just thinking aloud that better beer and better grub would give a better meet.buster wrote:For me the location is about as far as i want to travel. It takes just over an hour to get there from here.

Its about an hour for us folk from the peoples republic (now liberated) too
The meets we have there are mainly fill ins in the summer, do we want to keep it that way or make it a bigger event and publicise it more and fix dates rather than someone just posting " shall we..."

Yes, I think you are right.daimlerman wrote:Please,I am not knocking the OP for organizing the meet, just thinking aloud that better beer and better grub would give a better meet.
On a cold dark night there needs to be something more attractive than a nice big car park.
We had a cracking meeting at Howden last night in the Barnes Wallis - 35 guests including 6 new faces, which is a fantastic turnout for a monthly local area gathereing especially on an extremely cold frosty evening.
The pub is not the easiest to find on the map and the car park is more like a postage stamp - but the atmosphere inside the pub is what draws folk.
You can't beat a good pub for club nights.

If we were to retire from Squires for the winter and you still want to meet in the same sort of area.. there are no end of good places around the A1-M62 intersection.. (thats my parish and I know it well).. let me know if you want some suggestions - or you choose your own, I'm happy to go with the flow - whatever you do, don't give up on the meet.

Please do this, lets go ahead with this meet at Squires,we can talk about it there, but if we have some suggestions that will help. Buster, how do you feel about the area mentioned?essfourteen wrote:If we were to retire from Squires for the winter and you still want to meet in the same sort of area.. there are no end of good places around the A1-M62 intersection.. No, it's your aftershave. 'Raging Bull' by Dior, I believe.essfourteen wrote: but the atmosphere inside the pub is what draws folk.
I may well go to Squires in the Summer. On a nice sunny evening it's probably okay, but the actual pub is a shithole - it literally stinks of stale beer, 400 year old p*ss/beer/fag stained carpets, ruined seats plus tables that wobble. Driving that far to sit is that rancid, fetid hole and drink garbage like John Smiths or Boddingtons is not an option on cold dark nights.
Sod Squires - come to our Howden night instead.

I agree that the place has gone down hill and you see it especially in the winter months when the magority of the time is spent in the pub, its a shame as it could be made so good.
Im happy to go to a different venue if anyone else knows of somewhere.
James.

Right, that's it then - the bright lights of 'Ponte' Carlo and 'Cas' Vegas it is.buster wrote: Yeah that general area is fine by me.
Suggestion No1
The Spread Eagle at Darrington. WF8 3AP
a good old fashioned pub with a large car park - 4 guest ales and proper food.
Situated 500yds from the A1 slip road just south of the M62 interchange
