Really depends which route you go down, I researched and concluded good speakers in the front were important. I tried to resist an amp but the benefits could not be ignored. So on Clffybabe's advise I purchased:

EP4 amp, found it for £130:
http://www.sextonsdirect.co.uk/EP4_hert ... ifier.html

Hertz Speakers EP4 + tweeters £110 Front only

Alpine headunit £200

I know it is a lot of cash for a system but I think worth every penny. You can pick up other Hertz speakers (or other brands), for less money and not bother with an amp.

Yo BIG SUNNY, hows it going?
I've got 6.5 in my rear qtrs, but involve a bit of cutting.
Your going to be very limited as to what you can do as a straight swap.
Give this guy a ring 0121 773 7000 and ask for Gill, tell him i gave you the number, top guy as hes done lots of work on mine and the missus mercedes.
Let me know how you get on, plus he's always got some sort of sale on.

All depends on
a) how much money you wanna spend and
b) how much modification/customistaion you want to carry out...

Standard fit will be 13cm speakers front and rear

You can get some quite reasonable co-ax units for around £30-50 or (even better, especially up front) are 2-way components (£50-120ish) with the mid driver in the standard location and the tweeter on the A-post or behind the door mirrors...

Both options will sound *lots* better if you buy a decent (4ch) amp (~£100) to drive them with as the amps in a standard head unit are *very* poor...

If you are prepared to mod a little, then get door pods made(or make them) to replace the door pockets and mount the mids in there....
A sub in the boot or (even better) built into the anel behind the rear seats will add loads of weight to the sound....

For standard speakers look at JBL, Alpine, Caliber, etc...
Steer clear of Vibe (from personal experience)...

Sony used to do a range under the moniker 'Customs'. They're designed to fit in the custom gaps. After about a month of bedding in, they sounded great. Not expensive either, even from Halfrauds. No visible difference to the outward appearance of the car.

This really depends on your complete install, what you are after and what your budget is.

There is not much depth in the rear quarters of the cab, so you have to be careful when selecting speakers for the rear!

I got some 13cm pioneers recommended by a zoner and they fitted straight in behind the speaker panel with very little work! They are for sale so if you are interested drop me a pm.

The Sony's I mentioned fit, but some small tabs behind there had to be removed. 30 secs with a hacksaw blade IIRC.

The tweeters are standard kit on some e30's. Manufactured by Nokia IIRC. They replace the panel on the inside of the car, opposite where the wing mirror attaches on the outside, if that makes sense!

AFAIK, the wiring for the tweeters should already be in your car?

No worries. Try ebay. Get the part number and try a main dealer?

i always remember the rear speakers were smaller than 13cm in my cab. 6 inch in front and 5 inch in the back seems to ring a bell but its been a while.

I am running JVC 2/3 ways front and rear sound good and cheap but as Jules says run them from an amp not the head unit - the built in amps in head units are cheap and nasty and this is reflected in sound. personally i would spend a bit in a mid range amp of around 200W and not worry about the speaker brand so much.

then later look to add a sub enlcosed in a box in the boot, here is my effort i basically needed 3 cubic feet internal box size for the speaker i had so this took some thinking as i still wanted a boot. i used as much space under the roof storage area as possible and angled the speaker to minimise the height. the box is ported with a 4inch wide by 13 inch pipe which fires to the side you cannot see in the pic. this is more than anough bass IMO and do NOT be tempted to cut any of the rear seat panel - its structural

i put vibe slick 50s in mine. fit the standard holes. they are fit for 70w rms so is plenty for any 4x50w head unit. they are very loud but the bass does begin to break up when volumes too high, prob the same with all small speakers. really good mid range, high frequency though, considering a sub for the boot now.
