Top speed of the e30 chassis

Hi everybody, this is a kinda need to know question but i dont know if anybody can help me out here, i have a turbocharged e30 which i know will pull straight through the 200mph mark, i have already achieved 185-190 when i backed off, purely because i was scared of the car taking off. (i have a video of an rx7 tking off just above 200 and i dont fancy doing that to mine) does anybody know what the kind of limit is? the car has been widend with m3 side skirts and m tec 2 kit and a custom diffuser where the spare wheel would be but the car is not exactly shaped very areodynamically.

or does anybody know if there is a wind tunnel i can borrow?

or if anybody has taken an e30 over 200mph?

any help would be apprieciated

Been discussed a few times on here, and the general consensus was that the shape wouldn't allow the 200mph bracket to be breached. You'd need some serious power, to get there either way.

Your car looks like a bit of a monster...any more pics/spec of it??

someone once said an e30 has similar aerodynamic properties to sierras and they manage over 200mph without taking off. iirc its about 900bhp in a sierra saphire.
what power do you reckon youll need to cross that 200mph barrier?

id be worried about it taking off at that speed too! lol

theres a thing called 'Computational fluid dynamics' which would probably tell you if your car was likely to catch air underneath it and take off, maybe fire off an email to a uni professor or something?

the new evo's have those fins on the top to keep it going straight at high speeds:


and the ferrari 360 has them underneath


is that what youve got where the spare wheel should be?

i don't know about the top speed im afraid, but maybe these things would stop you making the first e30 flight accross the channel

my e30 was pulling like a slut at those speeds but i had that vid in my head and i didnt fancy doing that to my car,

my e30 has a 2jz-gte engine in it 3L turbo with a garrett GT35R external wastegate, 1000cc injectors, 4 inch exhaust, aeromotive fuel system aem management, hks twin spark, cp pistons, carrillo rods, full port polish, 3 angle valve etc

285/30/18 at the rear and 255/35/18 up front 3.07:1 lsd, 6 speed manual gearbox geared to 240+/-

they have been known to push 700hp, i have the larges of its type, although it still needs to go on the rolling road for fine tuning and power outputs, everything else minus the turbo is all good for over 1000hp, the internals are good for 1600 but there is not point, i like the trade off with the power/lag ratio i have now, i dont really know what you would do with more power? it spins up in the dry at over 100 anyway i dont fancy spinning up after that!

i reckon you might need a bigger turbo than that gt35 to make it. i dont think 700bhp will manage . over 900bhp in a sierra and about 800+ in an escort to break 200mph.

with a E30 M3 and a 745i engine.

i have also used large plastic cowlings underneath the chassis from a mercedes to keep the air underneath flowing straight as possible but my 4" exhaust system isnt exactly inline with it!

10mph more won't do any harm

im no expert, i just remember reading from the guys that did it before. they said the amount of power needed rises disproportionately the faster you get so although you might hit 185-190 as it is now to get to 200 might require another easy 100+bhp.
have you had it at bruntingthorpe proving ground? thats where the southerners seem to go for the high speed runs.

If you do try to crack the 200MPH again make sure you video it either way (take off or 200mph) you'll be a hit!

Anyways, to the point, it'd need very much information of your car to get it calculated, and no-one would do it so all you can do is to make your car look like +200MPH stock cars, both underneath and over the car. That's basically all you can do.

it was suprisingly stable, but i am running full Z3M front and rear suspension along with KW V3 coilovers, i wouldnt have taken it to that speed unless it was stable, and it also felt very planted, iwould have been comfortable taking it round a long sweeping bend at those speeds

Hi Karan you will soon find if not already that your inlet manifold is in the way of the brakes! if you need one let me know, i had a custom one made to fit with the standard brake servo setup along with a 75mm throttle body

You need to buy Katz's book on race car aero, get a big front spliter, some canards, smooth the undernreath, rear diffuser, gt race style rear wing with end plates up high in clean airflow

Good question, at the moment it is running e36 m3 evo front and rear brakes and disks with 5.1 brake fluid, they are very good but after 3-4 hard brakes from 160-70 they start getting spongy

i cant comment on MPG because since ive had it on road i havent had it tuned and also melted 6 pistons, yes all of them!

so now its being built again with all the new internals i posted earlier, then i need to do 1000miles and then tune it and then ill let you guys know, i also have a supra TT witht the same engine and that doesnt do too bad, but all depends on how you drive.

Next thing on the list is brakes, the car was only built a while back so fluid is now, and was bought from burton power, the road legal version 5.1

I'd suggest a decent setup on the front then fella
Nothing less than 330mm disk and bells with an absolute minimum of 4 pot calipers from AP/Alcon or Brembo
Preferably ones with a significant increase in pad area.

Rears should be ok as they don't really do that much anyway

You still haven't mentioned what diameter wheels you've got?

They will be the deciding factor on what you can fit
