today the licence plate light came on on the check display, but the lights are fine, any ideas???

Probably a bit of rust where the light screws go in. A bad earth connection can do it.
My old E28 528i used to do it. Sorting the rust on the light screws sorted it.
Currently slumming it in an E46 Touring
