Wobbling When Breaking

Guys some assistance please......

I had some new discs and pads fitted about a month ago and have run them in about 600miles without any excessive hard breaking, but for the last few days the steering wheel has been shaking when I break?? It wobbles slightly at about 50-60mph but more so when i slow down, I don't know if this has anything to do with the discs and pads?? (EBC Discs and Pagid Fast Road pads) or it's something else?? Balancing, Ball joint etc Any help would be appreciated as this is really pissing me off!!

You could take the front wheels off and measure the run-out of the discs with a guage. Last time I put new discs on I spent ages sanding and cleaning the corrosion from the hub where the disc is bolted to.

Worth it though, ended up with no run-out and improved brakes.

I would get the wheels balance you may have lost a weight or something. Somewhere like kwik fit will do it if it doesnt need doing you dont have to pay.

or whoever did it put them on wrong

take em off... clean area between disc and hub using saindpaper...then refit

Like said above, check that the face of the hub is clean and corrosion free. You want the discs sitting flat on the hub.

But TBH, if its more noticeable when braking it sounds like the discs could have warped. If they are the grooved EBC discs (I think they are directional discs), then as Karan said, check they are fitted correctly. If the grooves run the wrong way it could cause the disc to warp.

Not that I'm accusing anyone of doing this, but there's an easy way to warp brake discs that we all probably see every day:

If you brake even gently from a moderate speed, say 40 or 50 mph for a set of lights and then leave your foot on the pedal while you wait for the lights to change, you stand a really really good chance of causing high spots / warping of your discs.

The reason for this is that the discs and pads get nice and hot under braking and when you stop leaving your foot on the pedal, not only do you irritate the guy behind, but you also insulate that little area of the disc with a hot pad.

The rest of the disc cools down at a different rate to the hot and insulated bit and hey presto! warped disc!

Pal318is hows you control arm bushes? I've had this twice on two cars, I had a definately warped disc on one side so I changed them both, was ok for a week or so then it started wobbling on braking like yours. So my mechanic changed the discs again, only for the wobbling to reoccur a while later. Following advice from here I changed the bushes - they were well knackered, and I never had the problem again, until I got my new car. Again, changing the control arm bushes solved it.

I had the discs taken off and refit as they weren't sitting right, about 2-3 days after having them orginally put on?? My PAS rack needs replacing, which i have at home ready to go on, but the steering has been squeeking more so the last week or so, could it be a ball joint then?? The brakes have been squeeking more since this has been happening??

i had a simular problem on my last e30 the bottom ball joint it was completely worn out so put in a new on, well had to change tne whole wishbone because the ball joint is sealed unit.The car then stopped perfect

This is a very simple thing and probably not the cause but just to make sure there are no accidents: make sure the wheel bolts have been done up tight!

Like I said, probably not the cause but I just wanted to make sure.

Checking the other things that have already been mentioned should find the problem.

My brakes squeek when the pads are not warm enough or i barke gently, plus the disks are sqweeky by nature i think! Probably the same with u as your using fast road pads and grooved disks

I use ATE power disks (grooved also) and Mintex C 1155 competiton pads and these are the daddy can lock them up at 90 when warm in the dry so they work very well when needed!

I would check your control arms as worn stuff on the front end will not help the situation!

Sounds like you have a sticky caliper, that will cause one of your discs to warp. If your not confident or experienced enough to check the calipers out then get someone one who does. Its alright replacing new bushes when needed but i still think your gonna replace something to hide whats really wrong. Bit like taking tablets for a back ache, tablets take the pain away but the problems still there
