Kind off agree, thats why I'm not to bothered, as mine is just run of the mill!!!Jhonno wrote:depends how finely tuned your lump is.. a race engine it makes a massive difference to life, a boring run of the mill lump less so
opinions on airfilter

i hate air filter debates too but to be honest i'm happy with mine and i don't think it's harming my engine!
people KEEP saying k&ns harm engines, but keep forgetting to include any testing results or proof or ANYTHING to back their claims up!
plenty of particulates get produced in the engine itself from combustion products eg soot/carbon, that's why there's an oil filter. surely anything that gets into the oil goes thru the filter.

I fitted a K&N panel Ԛâ€Ëafree flowÔš' filter to my 318is after I read on Brendan PurcellÔš's famous site (and was impressed) that his 318is M42 engine was dynoed at 144 bhp (not to be confused with chipping, which he did afterwards). Note that he used a Jetex filter, which I guess is pretty similar to K&N. Since the 318is is officially rated at 136bhp I thought that he obtained a whopping 8 bhp increase with a very cheap and easy upgrade. Was his car rated at more than 136 bhp before the filter upgrade? I do not know. I can say that my car flies as smoothly as ever but it is difficult for me to notice an 8 bhp increase Ԛ—a if I did get that - or even less Ԛ… I certainly do not feel I have lost anything. The car feels smoother but maybe it is just my imagination. I am happy with the K&N filter. From its working principles (ie. how air flow is improved with the material used), it seems like a good deal to me.
