Not quite, but close enough Dan, they are at least better than LSD's which is why im selling my M3 unit and welding up a rusty old 318 diff thats sitting in the dirt behind my shed. Will probably give me another 20 odd bhp as wellJhonno wrote:I thought welders solved world hunger and global warming or somethingpunk_sy wrote:ive been using a mig spec for about 3 months now and i love/hate it . i hate parking in tight places it takes ages but the thing is mint at drifting nowalthough it handles shite which i miss. gonna get a lsd when the m50 goes in tho .

Come to think of it, ive often considered welding up the rear doors on my 4 door, dont use it for carrying the kids about anymore so surely it would make it better than a 2 door?

Welding makes everything better is the moral of this story..DanThe wrote:Come to think of it, ive often considered welding up the rear doors on my 4 door, dont use it for carrying the kids about anymore so surely it would make it better than a 2 door?

stop being such an arse mate, i like to have a welded diff, and if you dont then fair play all we are saying is that its not as bad as you guys think.GrindCulture wrote:If i was to get an M50 and weld 2 of the pistons, could I make a 190bhp 4pot more easilly?

Jeeeesus christ I thought us 4potterers were tetchy b@stards.
Do you like having a welded diff? You do? So what the fvck does it matter what other people think about it? It's you car!
Also why does everyone seem to jump straight on my case as soon as I type anything?

Because we don't want to spend £300 on a slippy diff that will most likely not be suitable for continual arse out action, and instead we weld up the normal open diff, does that make us bad as people? Does that mean we wouldn't get along in real life? No? Good, well stop being pricks about it then.
We all admit a welded diff makes the car handle worse, and we all know it makes noise when parking (can't see how "it takes ages" mind, it just makes skipping noises, unless that puts you off parking normally or something?), but we also all know it makes the car drift a lot better than with an average LSD or an open diff and that's all we've ever said. I don't see why people think it's so bad, or why it makes people think they can take the piss to such an extent? If you don't want to weld your diff or you don't like having fun in your car by nailing the shit out of it and driving a track whilst pisstakingly sideways then fair enough but no need to be cuntish to those who do.

thread hijack or what. the original post asked how to weld the diff up. and if you have done it, could you help him. not will everyone get on a high horse and argue like children about lsds and welders.

I was never cuntish to anyone on here, I never insulted anyone or said they were a shit driver, or their car was shit, and I've not even said that I disagree with welded diffs! Why's everyone on my case!?

GrindCulture - no idea mate, I saw you giving an open, fair perspective view from the beginning and thought 'good for him'...!
Don't get me wrong, If I could get a decent LSD or 2-way diff for my E30 cheap, I'd have one over a welder for sure, but as I can't, and I like to drift, a welder is the way forward.
Mattyb - this is normal mate

So.... keeping on topic.... what is the best style of weld for my rear doors? TIG welding is very nice but I dont have a set, MIG welding would be easiest, stitch or continuous run though? Does brazing count? Or I could go complete pikey and get some nasty old ARC rods on the go leaving the slag where it lands for the 'rat look' approach
^^^^^^

I have a welded small-case 4.1:1 here if anyone wants it; 40 quid to you, sir
Dan - stitch, definitely. Continuous weld will cause unsightly distortion
(I'm actually considering doing this to my 4-door track car)
