Afternoon gents,
What is the best way to get the steering rack past the sump when removing and refitting it? Is jacking up the engine the only way?
Cheers,
Bryn.

unbolt the engine mounts, jack up the engine by the gearbox or by the sump but use plenty of wood between the jack and sump, or it might crack

no need to do that.....
what you need to do is bend the lower mounting tabs on the subframe down,
lift the rack into place and tap the tabs back up again, the bolts will pull them up nicely as well.
job done

The trouble with bending the bracket down is you ruin the coating on the subframe that then leaves it prone to rust.
and if you jack up the engine you may split a water hose or crush something.
If you can be bothered to surpport the engine and drop the subframe its fairly straight forward and you don't have to dissconnect the tracking arms.
It also give you more room to get the pipe and bits in if you still have them connected to the new rack.
