What do people recommend, has anyone got any proven improvements etc

I've heard mixed views, so thought this would be interesting!

Keep your standard paper filter - best at filtering and gives excellent airflow when clean.. at a couple of quid a shot its soo worth it at least in the longeivity of your engine..

Not really worried what to do on mine, just thought it would be interesting to see peoples views, although mine has actually got a k&n cone on it at the moment!!!

as i said - best type of filter for actually filtering the air - improving the life of your engine

cheap

flow just as much air as a cone or other filter as they are folded so actually have a massive surface area

K&N panel filters are folded..... they improve air flow over paper filters, and last forever...

so your comments are a tad unrealistic

you have to be bothered to clean them of course - the only downside

what about an Other Panel filter option.

Im thinking of replacing my panel filter with a Green Cotton panel filter as I have heard good things about them and they are a bit cheaper than K&N

i've never heard anything bad or had a problem with k&n filters, they seem to get a lot of stick from people but i don't know why?

someone please tell me if there's a good reason!

i like cone filters because (on my cars at least) they make a lovely noise!

i have a compromise - my friend put a high performance filter on his honda integra type r, so i borrowed the old filter. it's paper and cone shaped, used to be in an airbox in the honda but i have it without a box.

sounds nice and being a stock factory honda filter im sure it's filtering properly. can buy em new for reasonable money, i checked.

I guess this arguement can go on forever, over whats better etc.

There was a post like this up a little while ago, and someone had found a very interesting site, which prooved as best the guy could, that the stock paper filter was the best.

Cone vs panel.
Usual trade off of cold air into airbox & panel vs. engine bay temp air into cone filter
Have tried a pipercross cone & an ITG panel in a factory airbox,
no difference from the driver's seat but maybe something would show on the rollers. Perhaps I got it wrong both times?

That doesn't follow at all. Surface area is only one factor - permeability would seem to be a lot more important for flow. While a paper filter may start off flowing as much air as a K&N type, elementary mathematics will tell you that a filter with smaller holes traps more particles, and so will clog up quicker. There's just no way round that one.

Of course, the downside is that one with bigger holes will let more through...

Best thing is to look for advice which is backed up by some kind of knowledge based on scientific testing, rather than emotional but meaningless "Such and such is CRAP" type statements.

I use a K&N panel.

I'm a K&N panel filter fan , thats whats in my 325 touring turd, mind you it was free, i found it in a scrapyard turd and slipped it into my box (ooh err). Some hero must have done a dyno run , testing all the options. I personally think the cone type filters would come out worse unless a proper cold air source has been utilized and the filter isolated from engine bay heat.

my opinion only of course... but it makes the engine sound nicer than with an airbox installed, filters as completely as with an airbox installed, and power feels better than when i had an air box on it - which isn't surprising as it's a very large cone with a ducted cold air feed from the front of the car.

so what bit don't you understand?

that's a pretty useful statement to add to the debate

as i said before, i'm interested if there's a scientific reason or scientific backing.

how do you think they claim they can flow more? by having a more open surface therefore letting more 'stuff' through..

yeah that is why you have to oil them.. they'd be worse without!

anal.. depends how finely tuned your lump is.. a race engine it makes a massive difference to life, a boring run of the mill lump less so
