stuck on brake lights

Just noticed this morning in the reflection of a bus that my brake lights are stuck on!

The only thing I've done which may have had an impact on this is fit fuses and relay for front fogs. I doubt that's the cause but I'll check there first.

Is this something somebody's come across before, or a common fault? I had somebody pump the pedal for be breifly and the flickered a little bit so I'm suspecting the switch.

Anyway, other suggestions welcome.

Deffo brake light switch, lost count of how many E30's I've seen day to day with brake lights permanently illuminated!

I've got the exact same problem.

I'd be interested to know how much the replacement costs and how easy they are to fit?

when I've poked my head down those parts before for doing speakers etc I'm pretty sure it's a simple microswitch with one or two screws. should be two minute job but I'm just speculating.

Well I didn't go to gsf on way home I thought I'd take the switch off the old '25 (prefacelift) and swap them over... I discovered this:

moutings: prefacelift has a two 13mm collor nuts. facelift has a plastic clip thing. different connections.

arse.

oh well, turns out some solder, tape, wire cutters, grips and a 13mm spanner are all you need to "convert" them

I thought to myself, fook it. why bother with a new switch when I can do it the mans way. grr.

Is it possible that this switch would also cause the brake light check on the dash to light up when your driving?

sounds reasonable as this is what happens on mine,

all i do is turn the ignition off and back on again which seems to cure the problem for a while.

I paid Ԛ£8.86 for the switch from a BMW dealer, had to order it as not in stock.

Easy to fit just a bit fiddly

Someone pointed out a similar problem on mine. They stick on every now and then after I have touched my brake pedal.

Just been down to ECP and bought myself a new switch. For ref:

maybe i have a different type of switch ('89 325 originally) but i found that the switch wasn't adjustable despite what the manuals said.
I just bent the bracket that the switch is mounted in a little way to allow the switch to work properly. Now works fine. Worth a look before you do anything else.
Otherwise the books showed that you just needed to alter the switch position with the screw thread rings holding it in place.

The switch has a nut to allow for adjustment.
Although if it hasn't been touched lately then i would suspect the return spring on the pedal is worn. That or your brakes are binding because the linkage to the brake servo is in need of a good oiling and not allowing the pedal to return to the top of it's travel.
Can you put your foot under the pedal and lift it slightly after using the brakes ?

from what I could see the facelift switch is not adjustable but the old style switch I crammed in its place had two nuts (just like me).

I don't think this switch is related to the dash light for brakes.
