hiya people, is a Schrick Camshaft - 288 degree perfor... too much for road use or would it be just about doable? dont wanna stick it on my car and be having trouble at traffic lights etc... been told a 172 is plenty but ive managed to get hold of a cheapy off one of my mates and was wondering if it would be ok to install or not, thanks guys

288/288 is a bit extreme for road use. You will have problems at traffic lights.
284/272 is ideal for road use.

I dont know the M20 engine but I think with a re-map that cam will be ok. Yea, it'll feel more peaky than before but as I understand it, the M20 likes to rev so you'll still have a smoothe tractable engine. I doubt the 2.5 will lack low down, even with this cam.

do you think i would be better off with a 284/272 cam though, i dont wanna be installing this and be ripping it out a week later because its too heavy, wanna make it sound sweet and make it go like stink!

There's a guy on here Rowen from SA... he's running a 288 cam in his 325iS Evo1... from what I've felt it doesn't seem to have any problems.
I've also got one, just needs to be installed in my other head

Hi, I've just run-in a 272 in my 325i, I've noticed a loss of bottom-end (tick over and up to ~2000rpm) but the mid-range is slightly better and the top-end much better
although she now hits the rev limiter constantly - esp on the track - 'cause she's still pulling well at 6500rpm... Unichip here I come!
As for the 288, the only person who recommended this to me was a guy trying to sell me one, everyone else said it's no good for road use, doesn't tick-over properly and have to ride the clutch to pull away... all those 'racing starts' from the lights are sure to attract unwanted attention from PC Plod. Not only that but if you are installing a 'hot' cam you really should also install the vernier pulleys. the fast road cam (like the 272) can use standard pulleys. P.S. FYI, Schrick make their cams under licence to Cat or the other way round, anyway they're the same and the Catcams can be bought for a fraction of the price! Check out www.qep.uk.com

My racer uses a 288/288 and i wouldn't recommend one for a road car. It's just too harsh and you loose a lot of low end performance that you will wish you had on normal roads.
