It means its good but it woks in a count down order starting off on 5 greens on mine then to 4321 then yellow warning its coming up soon and then red its in need right now i would get a full service just as it goes into yellow myself or you can hold up till red i am not sure whether it matters that much but and how long yellow last as i get mine done before it gets there! The number of lights change on different years of cars/dash. 8)

filters (fuel air oil), fluids (rad, oil, gearbox) consumables like wiper blades, not to sure about the rest really, always sercviced my cars myself when the bits needed doing

the mechanic who does them will have a special tool which resets the lights, or if you are handy with aset of spanners, you can save your pennies, service it yourself and pick up a service light reset tool from egay for like £10

Or if you want to save more money, I'll sell you a bit of wire / bent paperclip for a mere £5, which'll do just the same job :)

TBH it would be down to the dealer and their labour rate as the labour rate varies around the country.

Ours is currently £99.96+vat per hour
yet Park Lane in London is circa £160+vat per hour

That is the annual check light that was used for telling when to replace the brake fluid or coolant (every 2 years)
and to do a body check for anti corrosion warranty.

So if a wire and paper clip works to re-set the lights, how do you do it?

I'm going to service mine soon, but I'm a mechanic myself so don't want to take it anywhere. Nor do I want to buy a tool to reset the lights.

Cheers

With the introduction of hydraulic tappets, the need for any adjustment is therefore eliminated and is not included in the regular Inspection I or II maintenance regime.

The hydraulic ones are not touched only the old style tappets

I have read here with the m40 engine to stick some diesel engine oil in a run for say a thousand miles then renew oil filter and back in with new petrol engine oil works a treat i have heard :)

This is one of mine, and whether it works or no, depends on if the tappets are clogged, or just plain worn.
The diesel specific oil contains a much larger concentration of detergents than oils for petrol engines, and these do a good job of slowly cleaning the engine.

Yeah that's it now Brianmoooore i read it off one of your post's. I have a question for you about my central locking by the way i have a Clifford fitted and the battery died for the remote and i am using my spare remote but i also put new 3 bolts into the door lock section as well but it has been playing up where it will lock and arm its self but pop the locks back up straight after sometimes when i hold them down and lock manually then arm alarm and press to enter it will work for a while but go back to the problem after a bit any ideas mate :? :)

The locking ECU will unlock the doors if it thinks the driver's door isn't closed. Check that the driver's door lock motor is adjusted properly in its slots.
If there is excessive wear in the mechanism, you may not be able to adjust it so that it will lock and unlock reliably.

BMW dealers are now matching service prices if you show them a quote from a local garage, 2 of my mates have done so in Cov at Damon hil (Godfrey Hall) on the Hollyhead road.
Quite surprising, but cn't blame them as they're probably feeling the credit crunch too, but good news for us i suppose

My Dealer has the 4plus programe and has slashed it's £110 per hour down to £55 an hour. Pretty good to be honest. £160 per hour....what a rip off.
