Guys,

the temp gauge on my m20b20 stays between 1/4 and 1/2. Its had a new rad, waterpump and thermostat. Ive taken it for a 20mile drive but the gauge does not budge from the 3/8 mark. Is this normal??

A mate of mine said it could be under heating and that will make it heavy on fuel.

3/8, same as mine that, somtimes ventures to half way in traffic but you can hear the fan come in and it never goes above that.

As long as it never ventures far above half its fine.

Another case of E30 paranoia!! There is absolutely nothing wrong with your cooling system, so leave it alone.
Ignore your mate, he's not familiar with the finer points of BMW design. The whole centre section of the temperature gauge has an expanded scale and only covers a few degrees.
ANYWHERE on the gauge is an acceptable position for the needle, as long as it is clear of the blue and red sections.
Much more important that it doesn't move around, once up to temperature.
