im going to lift an m20 2.5 with the gearbox on into the bay
but my question is where is it lifted from because the loop by the dizzy surely isnt strong enough to hold the weight of the engine and box (or is it)
Thanks (in advance)

There are two, one at the top/front of the engine and one where the engine meets the gearbox (which can be a bit tricky to get to when the engine is in the car).

Here's a photo showing the location of them:

My M42 (not as big a an M20) and box was lifted from just the front bracket (toying with fate I know  ), and it didn't even bend!
Not in E30s any more :(

The hook by the distributor is quite adequate to lift the whole engine by - and the car as well when you forget to undo the engine earth strap or clutch slave cylinder!
The rear eye, by the starter motor is used to angle the engine, but will have no load on it at all when a M20 engine and box are angled enough to remove them.

Bit off topic but the OP should note that if the rear of the car is lifted it is a whole lot easier to get the engine/'box fitted.
