I know this may seem a no brainer to any BMW fan, But I've driven both and they both have good and not so good points.

Forget about engine and spec, purely on looks and handling which one would you go for???

if you're heterosexual go for the beemer or if a 'mans man' go for the CLK as it was voted the gayest car in a survey one year, i think dale winton and graham norton had them

I voted E46,surely the BMW drives and handles better than the MERC!

I havent driven a CLK but have driven a couple of E46's,a 318i and a 330d auto. Both were nice cars, the diesel felt as fast if not faster than my 528i

E46 handles very well, Merc is an arm chair cruiser.

seriously i know a guy who worked at a merc dealer in the late 90s to mid 00's and this era clk had some serious issues with quality in an era where merc tried to maximise profit, he told me they scrimped on paint and they were getting rust bubbles coming through on area where moisture collected

Merc's build quality went seriously down hill in the 90's. I have repaired a few CLK's amongst other 90's Mercs and they are not a patch on BMW's of the same era.

E46 all the way!

Instead of the CLK why not the CE. When Mercedes built these like tanks. I would have this over the E46.

I say this not as a BMW fan but as a straight red-blooded man who likes chicks:

BMW Convertible.

The Merc is possibly the gayest car on earth, including Elton Johns champagne Gold Bentley.

This version of the E class (cant remember the W numer) and its derivatives are some of the best built cars ever made.

I've seen a couple of diesel ones abroad with nearly 1000000 km on them!

The W128(?) or this E-Class hold the Top Gear record for most miles of any without any change of engine component! Clutch did 250,000!

I had a 1989 300TE Estate before my E30. I still miss the comfort for those long runs, although generally prefer the E30. Was a great car :)

DaveGT, go for which ever one takes your fancy. How the hell can a car be gay for feck's sake.
Plus, anyone that worried about their masculinity might as well buy a Hummer.

I too didn't believe a car, or any inanimate object could be gay.

Until I saw that Merc for the first time.

No, the first two are cars for women, and the third is the biggest selling
sports car for a reason. They do not make their male owners wear make up, don cravats or in any way intefere with your piles.
Although, male owners of any of the above may well do.

ANY Convertible is gay. It's just the way it is.

They are inherently gay because they are all about attracting attention. This is gay.

They are also gay because they compromise the engineering integrity of the car so that you can feel wind in your hair and gay men can see you.

Take any awesome mans car, 911, Lambo, AMG Mercs - soon as you chop the roof off they are gay.

This is why I have struggled with the ownership of an E30 Cabrio, awesome as they are.

Which in itself, is gay.

Absolutely correct.

If it's any consolation, the SLK is gayer than the CLK.

This is true.

But you rarely see any men driving those.

Ah, the irony - there are no men man enough to drive such a gay car.

I think some of the merc's are seen more as womans cars or GAY as there more refined for cruising....haven't considered the Audi A4/late 80 convertible yet....

im gonna have to disagree guys!!! ive got a E46 cabby and wifey has got a CLK 230 comp cabby... although looks wise i would take the E46. for build quality and comfort its gonna have to be the CLK... dont get me wrong, i love my E46, but where my front wings are have started to rust already, theres no sign of any rust on the merc!!!, also less outside road noise when driving the merc compared to that of my E46... the merc just seems more stable and sticks to the road.. the only thing i have always hated on the mercs is the blooming handbrakes!!!

Been a while since the original post but got an E46 in the end

Image

Picked in up in Oct, It's been modded a bit since the picture, I've add a full grey leather m3 interior, sport bumper, smoked indicators, I've got a set of mew style 18 inch alloys to fit, brake upgrade etc, still miss my old E30!!
