Its with the CTCRC by the looks of it

If you are an avid race fan, have a look at www.pbmwc.co.uk, and www.racingsaloons.com

Always happy to give out the odd free ticket ;)

Yes to all the above. Racing with the CTCRC as JimmyC mentioned. Thats the "Classic Touring Car Club"

There is a calender on the club website www.classictouringcars.com

There were a few pbmw guys out with us at Brands a couple of weeks ago. Did have some fun with them. They've got the Grippier Toyo's but i've got a bit more grunt!!

There is another E21 racing with us as well as a very nice 3.0CSL (minus wings/aero bits).

Yep I know I'll be gaining some weight with the S54, but the car was only 930kg in M20 race trim. Now with a bigger driveline and the S54 I'd expect to be up to 980 ish.
May think about some bricks in the boot to get some traction and maybe some more rear downforce.

Also MOT ran out in January, however the plan is to have it up and running ready for a trip to the Pod in July.

Well the plan is to be out for Brands.

What E30 is it an M3? or more modified?

I was a similar pace to the Pre93 325's last year with a std 325 engine and Dbilas TB's. Now I'll have another 160bhp. Its going to be interesting whether the brakes will hold up and if I can get any traction.

Can I ask why use a welded diff on track? Or will you be drifting in future? :)

Very cool project though

Well first off its a lot cheaper than an uprated LSD. Really you'd want 40% or more on track whereas std is 25% if the diff is still like new which most are not.

Also the front running cars (Ford Falcon, Holden Monaro, Lotus Sunbeam) in Classic Thunder run Spool diff's. Which are basically a solid axle just like a welded diff. Supposedly the gains in the faster corners are much higher than the losses from the understeer in tighter turns. Also in tighter turns the throttle can be used to help matters.

Also the car will only be used rarely on the road so tire wear isn't an issue for me.

With that boat anchor up front leaning over the axle, you're going to need all the front end grip you can get + those tyres are going to get a killing! Personally I would budget for an LSD, it really is night and day with a welded differential.

If you need any help with getting more clutches in there, please send a PM to Graham or I can assist. :)

Yep tyres aren't going to like it much although they are 225/45/13 R888's. But when they wear out it'll be going onto 15"slicks.

I was running a Quaife ATB in the small case 168 E21 diff and 4.1:1 so not strong enough for the S54. I've also run a std E21 bmw lsd as 3.45:1 which didn't feel any different in tansition etc to the quaife on track apart from the obvious gearing differences.
Its now running an E12 Side loader 188 3.64:1 and stronger driveshafts/CV's.

Long term an LSD may be the way to go but i'm going to give it a go with the welder first. Got enough expenses going into this as it is.

Ah ok. Not sure when mine will be ready 100%. Mine's an ex PBMW car with a S50B32 engine circa 340bhp, traction on your's should be fine, well mine is with a 195/50/15 R888, even launching the thing off the line there is zero wheel spin.

With regards suspension and tyre wear with all the extra weight, the first time I used mine it still had the same setup as when the 318i engine was in and although it pushed on a tad in some corners I was quite suprised how well it handled, would race it like that if needed.

I'm sure the brakes will suffer as I found out, I've just got some 310mm discs and big six pot calipers to fit to mine. Hopefully they'll do the trick!

We should have some fun then and be reasonably close.

Got the engine out, cleaned the bay up a bit and refittted the engine for the last time, hopefully.

Hi

Never got the airbox with the engine and it just looks awesome with trumpets. As its purely a track car filters aren't 100% necassary however I will probably fit some socks to be safe from any gravel

I would of thought the std plenum would fit easily as there is no servo to worry about on that side of the engine bay with an E21.

Wasn't really thinking about the filters, more the fact I would have thought the standard airbox would offer more performance. Or even better, a tuned carbon airbox

There should be bellmouths inside the std airbox and its the length from these to the head that affects performance. So effectively I have the same setup without the box around the trumpets. My advantage is I can now easily play with intake lengths to move the power/torque curves around or at least see if it makes any difference.

Progress:

Exhaust system has been made now and the car is at Emerald for the software/ECU updates and mapping. Should be running this week and finished by next. Can't wait to hear it winkeye

Oh my... that does look impressive!

Please though - do fit some kind of air filtration......! 8)

Gravel is the least of your worries, especially on a lovely engine like that - trust me, I am an engineer!
