You have not removed all the tar on the floor. I would suggest you get this off as there is another 35 - 50kg's or weight you can get rid off. Took me 2 days with a heatgun and scraper. Did the floor, inside the doors, rear quarters, boot and underbonnet.

I have got it all of mate, trust me. That isn't the latest pic. Hardest part was behind the drivers seat and the foot wells. tranny tunnel and back passenger seat where a dodle. You can heat it up to much which is where i fucked up on the footwells  live and learn eh?

More coming soon

Do you know how heavy 50kgs is? there is no way near that amount of sound deadening in an e30

I consider myself slapped!!!! (can I say I enjoyed it??!)
Ok, what have I got........so far it's probably like most, an unfinished project waiting for the time and money to do it! The idea of an E30 track car has been with me for a while so when I dumped the b!tch of an ex who disapproved of me "wasting money driving round in circles" I finally put it into action! :-)

The tale starts with a sad story. The first car I bought, an '88 325i for only £500 turned out to be more rust than metal meaning I had to scrap it but not before the engine crapping out on me and me biting the bullet and lumping out £1400 on a totally rebuilt 2.5 M20 lump from Frit's Bitz complete with cam etc etc.......a bomb proof 200BHP+ engine is what I asked for. So, after 2 months I had an engine, M3 clutch (to go with the new engine of course), a pair of harnesses (e-bay bargain, couldn't resist!) and the full set of 15" BBS wheels which were the only things salvaged from the original car!!

A few months later I saw a bargain on e-bay, a 1990 316 2 door that had been given the engine, gearbox and LSD from a 325i Sport and fitted with SPAX adjustable suspension, not bad for £1200 I thought, particularly as the shell is mint and had a pair of old Recaros in it already?! With money a bit on the short side I'm not able to implement my full plan but have done some work on it with plenty to come....details as follows:-

Done so far.....
Interior fully stripped (including sound deadening/tar etc)
Stripped out every electric motor (windows/central locking etc) including looms, doors are totally empty.
Removed all locks from doors and even ignition.
Converted to keyless ignition using transponder immobiliser for security (plus it looks the business!!!).
Removed sunroof (completely, the mechanical workings even the internal metal tray section in the roof!) and fitted a polycarbonate replacement.

Work planned (in no particular order)
Brakes. Initially Zimmerman discs with Ferodo pads, braided lines all round. (starting life as a 316 I have to convert the rear drums to discs which means swapping the trailing arms which I've already bought and had re-bushed ready to go in).
Fit my lovely new engine (currently sitting in the garage :-( )
SD full cage with rear X and harness bars. (to suit the harnesses I've already got)
Seats (Monaco s probably)
Strut brace.
New rubber for my spare set of wheels, probably R888 of maybe A048 (I'll then have a road/wets set and a track set)

I'm trying to create a fully sorted track car for a total budget of approx £5000. I have a simple principle I'm trying to stick to.......
Does it make the car go, stop, or go around the corner? If the answer isn't yes to one of those 3 I don't want it in there!!!!

Sorry but no pics as of yet, guess I should get my camera out and show you how she looks at the moment?......watch this space!! :-)

Ooooh, anyone with any offers of advice of things to avoid or recommendations of parts that are good I'm all ears!!! Oh and I'd be especially interested to hear about track days people are attending, I'm hoping to have my brakes ready for Rockingham in November with Bookatrack. Anyone interested please let me know as I know Jonny and could well squeeze a discount out of him if a few of us book together!! Cheers guys :-)

I lunched the gearbox on Friday in the 205 keeping up with a Caterham. :) Enjoyed spanking 'a lot faster cars on paper' as usual :D Love this weapon

On the plus side, the adjustable suspension works quite well. Goes sideways if you try a bit too hard. Found that full slicks on the front and r888's on the back work really well. Trying to get heat into the rear tyres is always a challenge in a FWD car with no weight in the back.

The car still made it back 65 miles with no gearbox oil at 45 mph on the a34

A shorter ratio box will go on now so that it can embarrass even more expensive machinary.

List of things to do:

Change the Box
Sort out the manifold blow
Change the inlet cam for something a bit more spiky
Chip the ECU so 7500 becomes a reality
Change the timing belt

Aiming for 175-180bhp with a short ratio gearbox 8)

Sorry not exactly what you were after Lloydie!

Hey guys please no use of the 'C' word on this forum :D A few pals of mine have various types of 'C's and if you really want to upset them just use the word 'Kit and 'Car' in the same sentence... :-x OUCH!

They are impressive bit's of kit but my pals seem to be leaning over the engine bay with the cover off and fluid of some sort pouring out on the tarmac. Not good.

Anyway...keep it e30 or a 205 gti at a push... :D winkeye

here's my (non e30) track toy. reading this thread the other day reminded me of the poor neglected car, unused in over a year, although i did go and make sure it was all ok and ran not long back.

story starts back in 2001 when i bought a standard l-reg 1.4 16v metro gti, did various bits and pieces over the next few years whilst at uni and ended up with a janspeed manifold, decat, custom exhaust, stripped interior, 15in compomotive alloys and 285mm front brake conversion, lowered and stiffened and on bilstein dampers.

oh, and some dubious body mods, including some home brew 'angel eyes' years before you could buy off the shelf kits.

it looked something like this...
Image
Image
Image

always dirty, and with rust somewhere on almost every pannel.

after years of endless abuse the 120000mile old k-series lump started getting a bit smokey so i decided to upgrade it a bit.

it just so happened a mate of a mate had moved to australia and needed rid of his metro project sharpish. a deal was arranged and i bought hi metro complete with 1.8 mgf engine, jenvey throttlebodies and emerald ecu, for much less than you'd be able to buy the bits on their own for.

eventually those bits, combined with some of the bits i alraeady had on my 1.4 got put into my cars shell
Image
Image

the interior was already partially stripped, and had the boot floor modified to fit my centre exit exhaust, and we sunk in a battery tray to free up space i nthe engien bay, and shift a large chunk of weight bioth further back, and lower down, the bottom of the battery is now level with the bottom of the rear subframe and the floor pans.
Image

the running gear is currently as folows
1.8 mgf k-series
pair of k-series vvc exhaust cams, one used for inlet, one for exhaust,
emerald m3dk standalone engine management
janspeed 4-2-1 manifold
decat
free flow exhaust
fse
jenvey direct to head throttlebodies with short carbon trumpets and pipercross sock filters
1.4 flywheel
rover 216 gearbox and clutch
grifeng quickshift

should be somewhere around 140bhp, with much more to come from a big valve head and proper cams. sounds insane

then i went a bit further with the stripping, removed virtually everything not needed, doorcards, carpet, covers, brackets, and all of the tar sound deadening stuck to various places.

amazing just how much stuff comes out of such a small car

i've also stitch welded most of the interior for both welding practise and an attempt to make the shell a bit less tin foi like :D

did have some pics of this somewhere

then did a few trackdays,
Image

and a vid of a mate in his e30 m3 following me
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... snetterton

the cars were perfectly matched o nthe straights, i was suffering from badly juddering brakes and was easy meat around the bends. still fun, and you can hear it pop and crackle at points.

little did i know that less than a year later i would own the m3 from the vid too 8)

by now i'd decided i'd grown out of the boy racer phase, and wanted to titdy the car up a bit, the condition meant every pannel needed paint, and wanting to do it on the cheap, in a colour thats easy to paint, and easy to colour match i chose rover charcoal metallic, and set to work with a load of rattle cans winkeye

in progress..
Image
Image
Image

a standard but debadged bonnet was put back on, and a spare set of headlights had their bowls and front facing outer edges painted black to give a meaner look, and the indicators were darkened too.
Image

the bumpers were re-smoothed
Image

and then painted matt black for a street sleeper oem+ look
Image

a couple of weeks after starting it was finihed and back on the road
Image
Image
Image
Image

sadly it's not been used for a long while, i just havent got the time to repair and mot it. it needs a pair of trailing arms which is a sod of a job, and i really want a hydragas pump so i can diy it but cant justify it when i have an e30 m3 and a lancia integrale also competing for my spare cash.

sadly in that company a metro is always going to lose out

it'll be back out and giving plenty of laugh out loud moments sometime, hopefully in the not too distant future
cheers,

harry

ha ha, exactly. you'd be amazed how many people say how much they hate metros, but how much they like this one. i need to get it back on the road and go goad some boy racers :D

i found another old incar vid on some backroads, which gives an idea of what it sounds like, though you lose a lot as it's a digital camera doing video, and doesnt have a proper mic

pretty dull to watch too i expect

Harry that is cool in a kind of sick way.

My dads friend has a Vvti? Mg engine in his metro rally car. Its got throttle boddies a proper exhaust manifold and revs like crazy. Its one of 'those' engines that is built by someone else to get pretty much the most out of it, whilst retaining some reliability as its a rally car in essance. Its rather expensive engine nearly died at abingdon the other week when an oil cooler pipe blew off  Its got a straight cut box, so all you can hear is gearbox whine from inside the car  A shame really as it sounds lovely from the outside.

He reckons its got about 220bhp, and judging by the cars it was spanking, he is probably right. You say yours is only about 140bhp, surely it is more than that? Or is that wheel BHP?

A proper little weapon, the wheels look great. :)

140bhp is a guestimate, at the fly. it's definately quicker than a standard 1.8 engined one. doesnt weigh much so it's easy to guess it has more than that based on how well it goes.

a standard 1.8 is only 120bhp, my mods help it breath better and rev higher, but it's the head tha's the biggest bung on my engine. the stock 1.8 head is identical to the stock 103bhp 1.4 head. the vvc cams i have put in are only a mild upgrade, a little more lift and a bit more duration, similar to a piper regrind of the stock cams but for 1/3rd of the price.

with everything else i have, a vvc head (which has much larger valves and better porting) with some 285 cams, which should keep the whole thing reliable and driveable should see 175-180bhp, which i would be happy with.

at the moment the throttleebodies add more noise and response than they do power, a head and cams would get them barking properly
cheers,

harry

I see, I've just had a look at the different engines. 160bhp was a VVC engine then, that has to be the basis of this rally car engine I presume.

180bhp in something that light will be fun. We are aiming to get our mi16 to around 180bhp or 200bhp if we spash out a lot more dosh(throttle bodies and management etc). Slicks, 800kilos and 180bhp =fun even if it is FWD. :)

yep, definately :D

i'm hoping to get under 750kg plastic windows, removing the sunroof and tray, lightweight fixed back seats and other bits and bobs mean it shouldnt be too hard. although it will get a cage and harnesses at somepoint which would push it back up again.

did you spot the pug 205 rear light conversion? :D

back when clear rear lights were an emerging craze i swapped the rears for 205 lights as noone did clear metro ones. a mate and i modified the rear 3/4s, boot lid and even the boot cutout in the rear bumper to make sure all the lines met up and looked factory.

then i realised how gash clear lights looked and smoked them

the things we do when we're young :D
